Winter onions rose before frost, there will be no snow - I boldly do it
When my winter crops first rose in November, there was a slight panic. Frost is ahead, snow is not expected, and the onion with garlic then rose well. The line of shoots of five centimeters stood. What to do?
On the one hand, the answer is simple, but there are nuances. I tell you first about that experience, and then about the modernization this year.
- Then I covered the sprouts with dry hay carefully so as not to break them. And more so that there is definitely enough heat.
- Our land was still completely unkind, almost without biota, and did not eat hay until spring. I had to take it off. The layer was thick, in places it began to sour.
- Another reason to remove the hay: the ground under it heats up longer, for two weeks.
- Both the onion and the garlic with the green pioneers overwintered well and started growing early.
The first thing I changed was the planting timing and the depth of the touchdown. The end of September and 15 cm for garlic is early and deep for Kursk.
The weather also matters, of course. It turned out this year on October 6, I planted garlic and onions at the same time. The bow would be needed later, just not the fact that the weather will allow, and I can get into another precious "window". How she planted she wrote here
Only white onions have risen, and red and garlic are sitting in their trenches, smart partisans!
Yes, this year I bought a set with my granddaughter and forgot the names of the varieties! Dutch :) White and red :) You think: I'll remember, as always! Oh, I forgot!
How she protected from frost this year
There were already frosts down to -4 ° C at night, the onion was not damaged. But every other day they promised -5-6 ° С in the afternoon. This is already critical.
So, on November 13, just on the sprouts, I carefully laid out a minimum layer of fluffed hay. So that the green is not visible, and so that the sprouts do not break. I tried to take dry hay, but I also got wet hay. Nothing, such a thin layer will dry out quickly.
Perhaps, in the spring there will be no hay, the earth will eat. If it remains in the same quantity, I'll take it off early. As soon as possible. Spring frosts are usually down to -5 ° C. Although there may be exceptions, fortunately, they are short-lived.
About onions, varieties, arrows and frosts
The main danger of frost is that the onion can then go into the arrow due to stress. Therefore, for a long time I planted only the variety resistant to shooting Stuttgarter Riesen before winter. And I liked Carmen! I risked planting him. And winter Carmen did not go to the arrow the year before last. Therefore, I decided to stop being afraid and boldly experiment with varieties.
By the way, in one of the seasons I had the whole spring Stuttgarter Riesen shot himself. Gradually, love passed to him. I decided to plant before winter, red and white.
The meaning before winter is - let the maximum moisture of the natural onion get and the minimum of my efforts.
You can do nothing if the onion or garlic rose in November. Seedlings may freeze, but this is not the end! New greens will appear in the spring. Only the plant will be weaker.
Do you plant onions before winter? What do you do if it rose in November?
I would be grateful for your subscription and communication :)
