Redevelopment in "Khrushchev", or how to fall in love with an apartment again

Our reader shared her story of repairs in the apartment with us.

Many of us are the happy owners of apartments in the houses of the Khrushchev era, popularly called "Khrushchevs". Why happy? After all, everyone knows that housing in such houses is already very small and cramped. However, praise to the current trends in the field of renovation and interior design - from the Khrushchev "konurka" today you can mold a rather cozy and spacious living space.

I will tell you about my experience of restructuring. An apartment made according to a project, popularly called a "tram" - two tiny corridors, two rooms, one passing into the other, a pantry, a mini-kitchenette and a miniature bathroom of the combined type. In a word, the square seems to be not bad (45 squares), but the space is used terribly ridiculously. Who invented this arrangement of rooms?

I got the apartment from my grandmother. But I really didn't want to move in here with a young family. And it was decided to make repairs here. After going through a lot of ideas in my head, and talking with experts in this matter, a project was adopted at the family council - we are converting the area into a kitchen-studio and a bedroom.

A start

We started from the audience. We made a wide arch in the wall leading to the kitchen - this is how our studio kitchen turned out. The previous entrance was covered with plasterboard. It was planned to put a refrigerator there.

The corridor that led earlier to the kitchen was used as an extension of the bathroom: although it is a small perimeter of the apartment, the bathroom has increased significantly. Accordingly, they knocked out the wall where the toilet door was located, repaired it with plasterboard, and a new entrance was made in the main corridor. It turned out much nicer and more convenient than before.

The case concerned the storeroom, which was located directly along the corridor from the front door. It was simply removed: all the walls were demolished (by the way, they were wooden). It turned out to be a rather long corridor and as a bonus - a niche in the hall, where in the future you can do anything - even a wardrobe, even a children's two-story corner.

The floors in the hallway and in the kitchen were made of tiles imitating parquet boards, and in the hall, laminate was laid, ideally matching the color of the tiles.

Budget solutions for the bathroom

The bathroom has a beautiful beige tile with flowers on one wall. A frieze with a pattern of sea stones was inserted along the entire perimeter of the bathroom, which added zest.

When it came to choosing a washbasin, naturally we wanted a countertop. But the prices for high-quality furniture are quite high, and our friends offered us an alternative - to make a cabinet of plasterboard, lay it out with mosaic tiles, and embed the sink. I liked the idea, and then it was embodied in reality. The result exceeded our expectations.

And the old cast-iron bathtub, which has not changed since the house was built, remained in place. We just covered it with acrylic, and it turned out very well - the entire layer of paint was removed from the old, scratched and rusty bathtub, primed anew and covered with a thick layer of acrylic. The bathtub has been transformed into snow-white and luxurious, and a new silver mixer with an original shape has added elegance to the bathroom interior.

The toilet was made hanging according to the latest fashion trends. And they never regretted it - this decision enormously increased the space in the toilet.

Painting the walls

When it came to the walls, it was decided to paint in the corridor with Venetian plaster - a dark base layer, and on top - smears with mother-of-pearl paint. The color scheme was purple.

In the hall and the kitchen, the walls were painted with light green latex paint, and only the working area, the so-called “apron,” was lined with mosaic tiles. Stretch ceilings throughout the apartment were made with built-in spotlights.

In the hall, where the entrance to the balcony, a built-in hidden cornice was made, and blackout blinds were hung on the kitchen window.

Almost new housing

As a result, we ended up with a fairly spacious and comfortable apartment, in which we now live. Kitchen furniture will soon be installed.

As for the pantry, which was removed, we did not regret the liquidation of this "storage". We have enough wardrobes, and in place of the pantry, a baby cot fits elegantly. In the future, there will be a two-story corner - a desk and a bed upstairs.
