5 Important Tips for Gardeners Who Want to Change Strawberry Places in the New Year
Every 4-5 years, strawberries need to be transferred to a new place - otherwise they will cease to bring a fragrant, sweet harvest, they will begin to degenerate and become smaller.
I have a strong craving for all kinds of changes, so I always moved the berry with great pleasure. But if you do not follow certain rules, nothing will work!
1. Choosing a suitable site
It should be sunny. And it's not bad at all if the strawberry is located among the seedlings of fruit trees or close to the hedge - such a shelter will protect it from the scorching midday rays of the sun and drafts.
In no case should you plant it in the lowland, because melt and rain water easily stagnates there!
2. We take into account the neighbors of strawberries
The predecessors of the berries should be crops that do not have common diseases and pests with it.
These include onions and garlic, lettuce, cucumbers, beets, carrots, radishes, squash, pumpkin, beans and other legumes.
It is not bad, by the way, to ennoble the site with green manure in the fall - by embedding the green mass in the soil during the autumn digging. But after potatoes, eggplants and tomatoes, strawberries cannot be planted.
3. Improving soil condition
It should be moisture-absorbing, but loose and with neutral or weak acidity. The ideal option may be loam, which needs to be dug up in advance and made a little easier by adding river sand.
Experienced gardeners still consider a mixture of ordinary garden soil, humus, peat, and also sand again to be a good substrate.
4. We apply the necessary fertilizers
A big mistake is to make them a couple of days before planting the berries, because there is so great a risk of burning its root system. I always dug up the plot 4-5 weeks before transplanting strawberries.
On the bayonet of a shovel, adding for each square meter 250 g of wood ash, 50 g of superphosphate and 25 g of potassium sulfate.
5. Correctly form the beds and plant
It is best to transplant strawberry bushes in August - at this time, most strawberry varieties have already yielded and the plants will be ready to start rooting.
They have every chance of a safe wintering and will be able to please with the harvest next year.
The distance between the bushes should be about 30 cm, and between the rows - about 70 cm. The hole should be spacious - to place the straightened root system and a depth of about 15 cm.
You can make it deeper or shallower, the main thing is that the root collar of the bush is located exactly at ground level.
I cover the transplanted strawberry bush with earth, but I never crush it tightly. Now all that remains from leaving is to water the berries in a timely manner and weed!
