How to remove shoots from Raspberries in the spring to increase the harvest of Berries in summer
Many have noticed that after a while, garden raspberries begin to shrink, and then completely, bear little fruit. Moreover, every gardener wants to harvest maximum yields from a small area.
The problems of raspberry wilting and a decrease in its yield are well known to me and I went through them myself. I was able to solve this issue by observing some plant care algorithms.
Increasing the yield of raspberries
In principle, there are several main ways to increase the yield of shrubs, and if all of them are observed, the yield will be maximum.
1. Raspberries need a lot of sun;
2. Good watering;
3. Cropping and cropping;
4. Treatment for diseases.
Three of the four listed methods directly or indirectly relate to the removal of overgrowth. At the same time, the most effective shrub pruning is in the spring.
Spring pruning
The optimal time for the beginning of the formation of raspberry bushes is the period from early to mid-spring. The period may shift slightly depending on the region.
Dry and frozen stems, underdeveloped and affected by a fungus, are subjected to pruning. At the same time, some varieties of raspberries do not require the removal of weak shoots, since they will quickly develop and give fruit in the summer, and they will have to be removed in the fall.
Spring pruning is also aimed at the correct formation of bushes that are localized in a certain area.
Spring pruning rules
1. Frozen shoots are cut to the first living bud;
2. Dry ones are removed at the root;
3. Most of the bush is frozen - the bush is completely removed;
4. Long branches are shortened to 1.3-1.5 meters in height;
5. We leave 5-7 annual shoots per bush.
Optimal technique
In practice, I use four tiers of pruning:
1. I pinch the longest ones by 15 cm;
2. The second tier consists of branches shortened by 25 cm;
3. The next ones are cut in half;
4. The rest are left near the ground, up to 5 cm high.
This formation allows you to see through the bush, provides it with a lot of sun and even the most central branches.
In addition, the constant formation of the bush using this technique facilitates its renewal and prevents spreading over a large area.
It should be understood that some varieties of raspberries are best cut in the fall after fruiting, as their branches bear fruit from the first year.
Double pruning is also used, which consists in forming a bush in the spring and removing branches in the summer after harvest.
