Tired of growing Crooked Cucumbers? Why this happens and how to help vegetables be healthy
Growing cucumbers is a fascinating and rewarding process, pleasing with a bountiful harvest from year to year. However, along with beautiful smooth greens sometimes ugly crooked fruits appear.
Why is this happening? How do I try to avoid this nuisance? I'll tell you now.
Violation of the balance of trace elements
The most common cause of the ugliness of cucumbers is a lack of trace elements in the soil, in particular potassium. In this case, pear-shaped cucumbers appear with a thickening at the stalk. With a deficiency of potassium, the leaves of plants become lighter, sometimes with dark spots.
If I find such changes in my cucumber garden, I is in a hurry to take urgent measures - I feed in one of the following ways:
· I prepare a solution of potassium salt at the rate of 30 g per 10 liters of water and pour half a liter with this solution under each bush.
I scatter granulated potassium sulfate on a cucumber garden at the rate of 50 g per 1 square meter of planting.
· I prepare a solution of ash - I stir a half-liter jar of ash in a bucket of water. I water 1 liter for each plant.
· You can spray cucumber leaves and whips with the same solutions, reducing the fertilizer concentration by half.
Lack of nitrogen in the soil is accompanied by the appearance of cucumbers with a pointed curved end. In this case, the leaves become pale and small.
In this case, my measures of ambulance garden help will be as follows:
· I dissolve 5 g of urea in 1 liter of water and spray the leaves and whips of cucumbers with this solution.
· After 5 days I scatter ammonium nitrate granules under each plant on the breast, 30 g per square meter of planting.
· You can prepare a solution of ammonium nitrate - dissolve 30 g of nitrate in 10 liters of water and water each plant with 3 liters.
· I water with mullein diluted 10 times or chicken droppings diluted 20 times.
· Sometimes I use herbal infusion diluted with water 4 times.
Improper watering
If the irrigation regime is violated, the fruits become hook-shaped, the skin is hard, the pulp is bitter. I always water cucumbers 2-3 times a week with warm water - not lower than 20 ° C.
If the weather is hot, I try to water every day. Only in this case can you avoid the appearance of crocheted cucumbers.
Sharp fluctuations in air temperature
With a combination of hot days and cold nights, cucumbers with a thin waist appear. To avoid this, I do the following:
· I cover the beds with agrotechnical cloth for the night.
· I put a barrel or buckets of water in the greenhouse. During the day, the water heats up, and at night it cools down, giving off heat to the surrounding air.
· In the morning and evening, when opening and closing the greenhouse, I focus on the air temperature. Sometimes you have to open later and close earlier.
· I mulch the beds with cut grass, it not only retains moisture in the soil, but, decomposing, releases heat, warming the roots of plants.
Delay in harvest
If ripe fruits are not picked in time, the plant will redistribute nutrients. The lion's share of them will be used to ripen seeds in overgrown cucumbers.
And for young cucumbers - according to the residual principle. Therefore, they grow up clumsy and unsightly. My rule is to pick cucumbers every other day.
When they didn't agree
If you plant parthenocarpic (not requiring pollination) and bee-pollinated varieties next to each other, then as a result of their cross-pollination, crooked cucumber offspring appear.
Therefore, I am very attentive to the description of the characteristics and the choice of the variety.
If you plant cucumbers in one place
Perennial planting of cucumbers in the same garden inevitably leads to the accumulation of substances in it that affect the shape of the fruit. A competent crop rotation helps me to avoid this.
Onions, garlic, and legumes are considered good predecessors of cucumbers. You can not plant cucumbers after carrots, tomatoes.
If you follow my simple advice, you can minimize the appearance of crooked zelents on your cucumber garden.
