Classification, scope and selection criteria for bits for a screwdriver
The main advantage of self-tapping screws is that there is no need for preliminary drilling of a hole and threading. Therefore, they are used almost everywhere where fast, comfortable and relatively reliable fixation is needed. However, it is not at all easy to screw in such fasteners without the appropriate attachment (bit). How do you choose the right bat?
Popular types of attachments
The modern Western classification of fastening splines contains quite a few types and sizes, including specific patterns. Outdated standards do not fit here, but high-quality Soviet bolts and screws are often found. In order not to deal with the whole set, let's highlight the most popular options.
Flat (S)
Obsolete, but still relevant, the type of slot - flat - is the simplest. However, it is poorly suited for mechanized large-scale use, since it is unreliable in the fastener. Therefore, it is mainly used for manual assembly of household appliances.
Special (anti-vandal) (Sp)
There are a lot of specific attachments, and not all of them are regulated. Hexagons, stars, forks and other geometric shapes are used where unauthorized or unprofessional intervention is undesirable. After all, not everyone has such a bit.
Socket wrenches (heads) or square slot (R)
The square slot can be classified as a special type. But if you choose the size that fits the socket wrench (head), you get an excellent attachment for the screwdriver. After all, some types of self-tapping screws, for example, roofing ones, are equipped not only with slots for a screwdriver, but also with a hex head. In car services, such a tool is especially relevant.
Self-tapping screw as a finishing material
The assembly of structures from timber, plasterboard or PVC panels involves the use of a very large number of self-tapping screws. Sometimes this value reaches tens of thousands at one object. Therefore, the type of splines used here can be called the most popular.
Bit and screws for PH2
In decoration and construction, as a rule, only four types of bits are used:
PH2 - for self-tapping screws for metal, plasterboard, wood, gypsum fiber;
· PZ3 - the most powerful attachments, well suited for working with wood;
· PZ2 - for reinforced yellow self-tapping screws for fixing with a dowel, dowel-nails;
· PZ1 - for the smallest fasteners used in decoration.

Bit PZ3
The difference between them is obvious if you look closely at the head of the fastener. Self-tapping screws for the PZ bit have twice as many slots, which increases the grip with the bit. Therefore, with such screws it is more convenient to fix narrow lightweight plastic profiles and load-bearing heavy structural elements. Of course, you need to choose the appropriate size - 1, 2 or 3.

Conclusion
Bits differ not only in the type of slot, but also in length, material of manufacture and coating. The most durable and expensive ones are titanium coated (yellowish). However, if you need to screw in a thousand self-tapping screws, it is better to buy a dozen cheap "black" attachments than one "titanium" one. Length is a rather important factor with positive and negative features. Sometimes a long bit is more comfortable, but a short bit is more stable. Therefore, when planning large-scale work, it is worth stocking up on several options, as well as magnetic extenders and holders.
