Panasonic Unveils Highest Brightness 135W Laser
Semiconductor lasers have long been ingrained and have a niche in manufacturing. So, for example, they are used in specialized welding machines, cutters, etc.
Their field of application is limited only by power. Company Panasonic seeks to remove these limitations by developing and introducing increasingly powerful lasers.
Representatives of the company issued a statement that they managed to create a blue laser with the highest brightness (at the moment).
This breakthrough was achieved through the use of wavelength combining technology (WBC, Wavelength Beam Combining), using lasers with direct diodes (DDL, direct diode lasers).
It was using this combination that the company's engineers managed to successfully scale the power and at the same time maintain an acceptable beam quality, due to a banal increase in the number of sources.
History reference
In fairness, it should be said that not only engineers took part in the creation of new technological solutions Panasonicbut also representatives TeraDiode (a company from the USA).
Their close cooperation dates back to 2013 and already in 2014 Panasonic launches the world's first robotic welding system LAPRISSwhich was equipped DDL lasers operating on technology WBC.
In 2017, the Japanese bought out the American company and a new technology was born in close cooperation between the subsidiary and head office.
How technology works
So, the principle of operation of the technology is as follows: a battery of many lasers (more than 100 pieces) with different wavelengths transmits radiation through a focusing prism to a diffraction grating.
At the same time, the distance from the grating and the angles of incidence are rehearsed so that, using the resonance effect, it can form a light beam of maximum intensity.
This is how it turned out to design a laser with a power of 135 W and a wavelength of 400-450 nm with the highest beam quality at the moment.
With the help of the new laser, the quality of edge processing after cutting parts with an industrial laser will significantly increase, and this will further reduce the cost of manufacturing components.
Prospects for the use of a new laser
In fact, lasers created using this technology are able to make a quiet revolution in industry and automobiles.
After all, the demand for blue LED lasers is already very high, which are actively used for processing copper blanks used in motors and batteries.
Also, in the future, Panasonic engineers plan to increase the power of semiconductor lasers by two orders of magnitude in comparison with current solutions.
