How easy was I to get rid of the Top Rot on Tomatoes last year

Vertex rot is a tomato disease that is familiar to many gardeners firsthand. I'm not an exception. My tomatoes were also struck by this unpleasant thing. Of course, it can be cured. This is what I did last year. But I'll tell you that it is easier, of course, to prevent a disease than to cure it later.

What are the preventive measures?

First, preventive measures accompany the entire cycle of plant growth and development, from seed preparation to harvest. You need to be ready for this.

1. Seed preparation

Even when choosing a variety, you need to be aware of the level of risk. If the description of the variety says that the fruits will be large, or they will ripen early, then this means that the risk of disease increases.

But this does not mean that you need to give up such varieties. I advise you to process the seeds in this way first.

Perhaps you also use potassium permanganate for this purpose. You just need to make the solution more concentrated, preferably 3%.

I put the seeds in a bag and send them to the solution for about half an hour. Then I rinse them under running water and let them dry.

2. Land preparation

To prevent top rot, I add a small amount of chalk to the soil prepared for growing tomatoes, you can use lime. In addition, already when planting, I pour a glass of wood ash under each bush, a little less.

3. Watering features

It must be timely and abundant. The best time to water is during the evening hours. It is at night that tomatoes begin to absorb calcium well, and this is necessary for them to prevent rot.

And if there is little moisture, then the chances of the onset of the disease increase significantly. To retain moisture, I recommend that you use a method such as soil mulching.

This measure should not be neglected. Humus can be used as mulch.

If, nevertheless, signs of apical rot appeared on your tomatoes, then this should not become a reason for panic. Remove damaged fruit immediately and dispose of it. Feed your tomatoes with calcium.

Start to control the moisture level in the soil, perhaps there is little moisture or a dense crust has appeared that needs to be loosened.

Don't forget about a sense of proportion. Excess moisture or calcium can also harm your plants.
