We grow cucumbers in a barrel, we harvest in May.

Summer cottages limit owners to a small garden. As a rule, it is impossible to plant all the vegetables, there is not enough space. Many of the gardeners use boxes and barrels to grow cucumbers, and this method is really effective.
How to prepare container and soil for planting
To create a bed, a two-hundred-liter metal barrel with a rotted bottom is suitable. It is worth starting preparation in the fall, which will allow the soil in the barrel to be compacted and after planting the root system of vegetables will not be bare. Of course, you can do the work with the onset of spring, but after planting, you will have to constantly pour earth into the barrel, and this is not easy to do with overgrown cucumbers.
Fill the third part of the container with tops of vegetables, small twigs, weeds, grass and droppings. Pour about 3 buckets of soil and 1 compost on top. Fill everything with plenty of water and cover the barrel with foil, creating a kind of greenhouse. So the barrel should stand all winter until spring.

Thanks to the work done, the lower layer will begin to rot, releasing heat that warms up the soil, and this means that in the spring you can start sowing seeds or planting seedlings, which will bring harvest to end of May.
How to sow and care properly
When it gets warmer outside, you can start sowing seeds. Fill a 5-year old eggplant with water and place it with the neck down in the middle of the barrel. Be sure to cut off the bottom in it and make many holes, thanks to which drip irrigation is created, which does not allow the root system of plants to dry.
It is worth pouring over the soil with hot water and sending the barrel under the film again. After the soil has cooled down and it is impregnated, you can start sowing seedlings. Take about 8 seeds and plant them in the soil. When the seedlings germinate, you can get rid of the weak plants.
Now you need to make a frame for the double cover of the barrel. This will require lutrasil and plastic wrap. This will protect future seedlings from frost.
After the seeds release real leaves, it is necessary to install vertical supports along which the plants will curl. To do this, you can take dry cherry branches. Thanks to such simple actions, the first harvest can be removed by May 20.
From one barrel every day, it turns out, to collect about a few cucumbers, which are enough for a small family.
Many gardeners prefer this method. It allows you to save space for other landings on the site, there is no need to put greenhouses. In addition, the compost rotted at the bottom of the barrel can be used as fertilizer in autumn.
