What to do to prevent chair legs from scratching the floor
When scuffs from furniture legs appear on the floor, for example, from laminate or parquet, chairs are usually to blame, because they are moved much more often than sofas and cabinets. If chair legs scratch the floor, you can equip them linoleum overlays or use the method described below. I like him even more!
To resolve the issue, I used 1/2 inch plumbing seals. Only it is better to take not rubber, which are black, but transparent silicone, since they are a little thicker and the material is denser. And they will definitely not have black stripes on the floor, which is quite likely in the case of rubber ones. 3/4 rings are suitable for large legs, but so far I have not put such.
On each leg from below, I first hit the center with a pencil, drawing a cross with diagonals. Then a screwdriver comes in handy and spade drill 16 mm. This drill size is exactly the width of the 1/2 inch diameter of the silicone ring. At low speeds, I make a small recess in the leg with a drill, so that the seal inserted into the recess protrudes about 1-1.5 mm above its edge.
Now you should carefully remove all dust from work surfaces, flesh before wiping with a damp sponge or cloth and letting dry, but this is optional.
Further I used a heat gun and applied a layer of glue in a circle. It is also worth filling the center hole from the pen drill to provide better ring retention. Anyone will do other polymer adhesive, you just have to wait until it dries up. And hot melt glue hardens in a couple of minutes.
Gently press the ring into the groove on the leg and wait for the hot melt to grip to remove any excess, if any. That's the whole technology.
Such a ring holds perfectly and remains completely invisible. This projection height is sufficient to protect the floor from abrasion. I have a laminate floor and now I move the chairs quietly and without fear.
The legs themselves, of course, already need restoration, but this is already the next stage of work, which has been put in line. The chair shown has two thicker legs and two thin (cm. photo 6). It was possible to implement the ring on both of them, although on thin legs it is necessary to drill exactly in the center so that the edges do not fall apart and one does not have to solve another problem.
As you can imagine, silicone rings cost a penny. From start to finish, it took about 30 minutes. I am satisfied with the result and, taking into account that the rings are on glue and the load from above, they will not fall out even from a shallow hole, unless, of course, you specially pick them out from there. In general, I share only the principle, and the details can be changed at will. What do you think?
