What is the best grape variety to choose for planting in the country.
Most summer residents give their preference to grape varieties that do not require winter shelter and proper pruning - Isabella, a hybrid of Isabella, Lydia, Russian Concorde and others. These varieties are rare and tend to be of low quality. By purchasing them, inexperienced gardeners believe that they do not need special care, but this opinion is wrong. These varieties require careful maintenance, as well as certain procedures such as annual pruning, fertilization, and watering.
Novice winegrowers, and not only them, should not choose Asian or Armenian varieties that love warmth and feel uncomfortable in the northern regions. For a comfortable life, these grape varieties need warmth and a lot of sunlight. Sandy and rocky soil is ideal for them, they will certainly grow on black soil, but they will give a poor harvest. But more importantly, they require a large feeding area, which is not available in normal areas. For a rich harvest, you need to properly form large bushes, but it is rather difficult to do this with too dense planting.
If we talk about the Eastern European varieties, then they require a much smaller area for growth. The number of fruiting shoots on one bush varies from 60 to 100%, while Asian species give no more than 20-40%. Of course there are exceptions, these are a few specific varieties called cosmopolitans. Rizamat belongs to this type.
Experienced wine growers manage to grow Asian species, but for this they use special agro-measures, planting a seedling close to the wall. During the day, the wall heats up and with the onset of night all the accumulated heat is given to the seedlings.
Growing grapes in the private sector is much easier than in vineyards. The fact is that the plant has more favorable growing conditions on the site. A lot of buildings, a fence, other plantings, trees, all this closes the grapes from drafts and cold winds. A microclimate is created that allows the cultivation of late varieties. On the site, the average daily temperature of the air and soil reaches 25 degrees Celsius, which allows the culture to ripen several weeks earlier than in open, unprotected plantings.
