Why did they stop keeping cows, piglets, goats and geese in the villages?
All my childhood memories of the village are associated with fresh, fresh milk and such domestic animals as: cows, sheep, goats and pigs. There was not a single backyard in the village where animals did not live. But during the last visit to the village, everything changed a lot: in almost none of the yards I saw neither cows, nor goats, nor other animals.
How could this happen? And so fast, too. I remember very well how early in the morning people drove the cows to a certain place, and the shepherd drove them to graze. They grazed the cows in turn. Children helped their parents, because there were a lot of cows: during my childhood, the herd consisted of one hundred heads. The village was not small, so the cows were herded into two herds. Thus, there were more than two hundred head of cattle in total.
What can we say about goats and sheep. They grazed in every meadow and orchard. Pigs could be seen in every shed, and not one at a time, but at least a couple. Poultry was innumerable: geese, ducks, turkeys, chickens and other varieties of poultry went to farmsteads.
And now, as an adult, I came to visit my relatives. Walking through the village, I immediately realized that a lot had changed: it was rare in any yard to see chickens, let alone cows. There was not a single herd in the village. Why, the herd, there is almost no cow left. It was only in the meadow that I saw two cows grazing on a leash. This is all that remains of more than two hundred heads.
Why have there been such serious changes in the life of rural residents? There are several reasons:
- the rural population is gradually aging. Elderly people, without the help of young people who have moved to the city, find it difficult to keep livestock. They cannot make hay on their own or grow potatoes, beets, and grain to feed their pets.
- the lack of large earnings in the village, and sometimes the lack of jobs. People who are low on money cannot afford to buy pet food, which is expensive. It is easier for them to buy products for themselves for these funds, and in their free time from caring for animals, to earn some money somewhere else.
- sales of finished products. Even if a person wants to sell meat, milk and other products, he needs to take all this to the city. This requires transport. These are additional costs, and it is not known whether everything will be sold. Previously, the state bought everything from people at a good price. Now there is no such thing. Farmers who are raising cows and pigs on a large scale have taken over the market. Private traders have no way to compete with them.
- people want an easier life. They are more willing to leave for seasonal work in order to provide their families with everything they need. Thus, people have the opportunity to relax. When you keep the household, there is no time for rest at all. The owner is completely attached to the house. He can not leave either on vacation or on a visit for a while. Pets require the attention of the owner every day and morning, afternoon and evening.
