Chrysanthemums have become part of our garden life. And for the best!

Fiery fireworks, fellow flower growers!

Shoots of perennial chrysanthemums have already appeared from the ground. It is already clear which of the bushes exceeded the limits of the boundaries allowed by the gardener on the flower bed. Or maybe you want to propagate a bush or share the cuttings with friends?

In any case: I assure you that spring is the best time for this! After reading the article to the end, you will learn how to properly divide the bush and plant small parcels in order to see the first flowers by autumn.

Why spring and not autumn?

In autumn, the very nature of the flower is tuned to flowering and slow falling asleep - preparation for the approaching wintering by cold winds. In the spring, on the contrary: the plant "starts", actively growing new roots. A which means that it will take root in a new place faster.

Transplanting and planting chrysanthemums in the spring is the safest. And again it's all about the roots! The plant needs time to take root until severe frosts break out. A stalk without roots, alas, will die if the unpredictable autumn weather suddenly turns into severe night frosts.

Having transplanted and planted a chrysanthemum cut in the spring, you can be sure that the seedling will have several months to take root and root thoroughly before winter.

Preparing a new place

I believe that any event in the garden should be prepared in advance and responsibly. And this is true even for such a simple procedure as a spring chrysanthemum transplant.

Take care of the place where the new chrysanthemum will grow in advance (2 weeks in advance):

  • Find on the site where the flower will feel good and will be able to please you and the guests of your garden. It has been noticed that the chrysanthemum looks most beautiful under the open sun, while in the shade the branches of the bush fall apart and bloom liquid.
  • Dig the selected spot to the depth of the shovel bayonet and scrupulously select all the roots of the weeds. Better to get rid of them now to weed less in the summer. It will remain to pull single weeds. Loosen the ground - for a young seedling, oh how useful it is to get oxygen to the roots!
  • Is the soil on your site neutral or even closer to alkaline? This is not quite to the taste of chrysanthemum, which loves slightly acidic soil. Therefore, scatter peat on the surface.
  • A lot of fertilizer is not needed for the planted cut, but for nutrition throughout the summer season, sprinkle a handful of nitroammophoska 20:20:20.
  • Once again, carefully loosen the soil, embedding the peat and fertilizer granules inside.

Let's get down to the main part of the work

I will give advice: choose to divide chrysanthemums (and other garden plants) cloudy weather. It's great if the ground is slightly damp. And if your flowerbed has already dried out, spill the plant with water in advance.

Take a close look at the chrysanthemum shoots breaking out of the ground. What piece of the future bush is superfluous and will only disturb the neighbors? Or what part of the flower will you leave, and what part can you give to a neighbor who has been asking for a "sprout" for a long time?

Use a sharp shovel to carefully separate the cut. It is best to cut in one vertical motion perpendicular to the flower bed. This will cause the least damage to the main bush. The chrysanthemum won't even notice!

We plant a deal to take root well

  • Dig a hole to a depth suitable for the chrysanthemum root system with a small margin. Pour water over so that the seedling does not dry out in the first days of its life.
  • Be sure to keep your distance: young plants will grow quickly. It is better to leave them space now than to replant in a year or two due to the tightness of the flower garden. Different types and varieties of chrysanthemums differ from each other in size, but "by default" between the bushes it is better to keep a stock of 50 cm: this will be enough for the chrysanthemum to fluff up and show itself in all its glory without busting in the form of floral jungle.

  • Plant the cut.
  • During the summer, make sure that the young chrysanthemum does not dry out in hot weather. Under the scorching sun that mercilessly dries up the earth, only a growing root system can fail to provide moisture.
  • In the first year after planting, the chrysanthemum does not need to be fed. Now the task of the deal is to take root. My experience has shown that it will bloom as it is. And the next year will be fertilized.
  • If your area has harsh and snowless winters, cover the chrysanthemum for the winter. At least a heap of dry leaves.
