Why there are no curtains on windows in Swedish houses
Sweden is a country that will not leave indifferent any tourist. Breathtaking northern landscapes, care for the environment, decrees for men - all this is amazing for foreigners. But what really shocked me when I visited this country was the lack of curtains on the windows of the houses.
Sweden has a law that prohibits the use of curtains and curtains on windows. However, today this law is not valid and exists more like an old tradition. This custom has been entrenched since the days of the Vikings. In those days, men returned from fishing at nightfall. To prevent them from getting lost, their wives put candles on the windows of houses. Since the curtains could catch on fire from a candle flame, their use was impractical.
There is also a version that this tradition appeared in the XII century. To fight crime, the royal guards walked the streets and looked into the windows of the inhabitants. Since it would be inconvenient to follow the lives of people because of the curtains, the Swedes were forbidden to curtain the windows.
Surprisingly, the absence of curtains is convenient for the residents themselves, because this way natural light better penetrates their homes. In addition, the Swedes are very liberated people, and they are not at all embarrassed by the fact that every passer-by can see what they are doing at home.
This custom is common not only in Sweden, but also in other Scandinavian countries, for example, in Norway and Holland. It is also known that such a law was in force in North Korea. Personally, I feel uncomfortable in houses without curtains and cannot imagine how you can relax when everyone can look into your window. How do you feel in such houses?
