Many believe that in the very near future there is no alternative to lithium-ion batteries. But Australian scientists do not agree with this, who discovered the possibility of storing energy in bundles of carbon nanofibers (diamond filaments).

As shown by the mathematical model, such batteries will be at least 3 times more efficient than lithium-ion. In addition, they will have absolute safety, since there is no need for an electrolyte in principle.

What is the essence of the new technology

Engineers at the Queensland Institute of Technology have described a new technology, according to which energy is accumulated and stored in the finest diamond strands. In this case, energy is accumulated in the process of twisting or, on the contrary, the compression of these threads - that is, a beam is formed.

And in the process of unraveling, the accumulated mechanical energy is released.

The scientists described the entire technology in an article published in the journal Nature Communication.

Computer simulations have shown that the energy density of a hypothetical beam of diamond filaments can reach 1.76 MJ per kilogram.

And this is just three times more than modern lithium-ion batteries.

In addition, one should also take into account the fact that there is no electrolyte at all in mechanical storage systems.

This means the mechanical battery is completely fireproof.

Where can these batteries be used?

The technology is, of course, interesting, but the question immediately arises where it can be applied in the future.

So, as stated in the research group, the batteries created using this technology can be used in medical devices (for example, in pacemakers), aerospace electronics, etc. P.

Well, let's wait for the first really working laboratory samples and then we can say more specifically about the project. In the meantime, it remains only to wait.
