Why artesian wells were drilled in the USSR in every village

Across the road, opposite the house in the village where I grew up, there was a water pump (as everyone called them) - a water tower with a drilled artesian well:

The depth of the well is more than 100 m. From it, a water supply system was laid along one side of the street and water columns were installed. Later we dug a trench with an excavator and brought water into the house. But the water was of poor quality, it came with rust inclusions. They did not use it as drinking water - only for watering the garden. We have always thought that water acquires this quality due to the oxidation of the metal in the tank of the water tower. But no.

A similar water tower and an older one was located 1 km away, and there the water was always excellent: no rust and calcium salts (no scale remained in the kettle). Only when studying the topic did it become clear that the rusty water from the well was due to the water itself. In the tank, when oxygen was available, iron was oxidized to a water-insoluble oxide and precipitated. Probably, water in different wells from different layers or faults.

Not all drilling specialists from the ads will be able to drill an artesian well for you. The most important thing here is not equipment, but experience and knowledge of the geology of the area. The very artesian well (with a water tower) opposite my house was equipped as a source of water for the RMM boiler room (mechanical repair workshop). They were drilled during the Soviet era at every organization with heating from a boiler house: Lespromkhoz, DK, school, hospital, etc. Drilled from 60-70s. 20th century and there were a lot of them in our village. Basically, they built wooden water towers for water storage with a metal tank.

Well, since each organization was socially oriented, then the residents used the water from the pumping station (in some places, as I wrote, they also carried water pipes through the streets). All this I am writing about a remote Siberian village.

By the mid-1980s, more progressive water towers were being built. Already completely made of metal. After the collapse of the organizations in the village, on the balance of which there were water towers, the district administration considered the maintenance costly to maintain. And they were forcibly closed. It's a pity…

The trend and laws are now such that if there is a desire to get good quality water from an artesian well, then this well will have to be handled independently. District administrations do not need this. These are large costs for legal entities and other persons.

An artesian well with a water tower may not be connected. The tower is just a place for accumulating water and creating a pressure for water supply.
