Main Reasons Why You Grow Poor Potato Yield

Most gardeners grow potatoes in their backyards. It would seem that there is nothing difficult in this: planted, weeded, dug. But, not everyone is able to harvest a decent harvest.

It's all about improper agricultural technology. This time I'll tell you about the most common mistakes when growing potatoes.

Poor planting material

Potato varieties vary greatly in fertility. If the variety is prolific, then one can hope for a high yield. In addition, it is important to sort the seed material before planting and prepare it. In 2 weeks, you need to get the potatoes from the basement so that it warms up and grows small sprouts.

Seeds that have not sprouted should not be used for planting. In addition, the planting material must be treated from pests. For this purpose, I use Fitosporin. This drug has worked well.

Poor soil

If potatoes are planted on the same territory from year to year, the land becomes very impoverished and is not able to give a high yield. That is why the soil for potatoes needs to be fertilized regularly.

I use organic fertilizers for this purpose. Most effective humus and ash. Once every 3 years, I add mineral fertilizing to the soil. But remember, you need to feed the land very carefully. If there is a lot of fertilizer, the crop will "burn".

Poor care

Inexperienced gardeners believe that potatoes need minimal maintenance. This is not true. First, the potatoes need to be weeded. While weeding, I slightly "stir" the ground around the bushes.

This is necessary to saturate the soil with oxygen. When the bushes grow up, they need to be spud. This is necessary so that the potato nest grows well in width.

A week before harvesting, I mow the tops. This is necessary in order for the potatoes to pour. And without the tops, it's easier to harvest.

Degeneracy

Many gardeners have not even heard of the fact that potatoes can degenerate and the varieties need to be periodically updated. Degeneracy is a deterioration in varietal qualities. The tubers become smaller, the peel cracks, the yield drops. Therefore, you need to periodically add new seeds.

Lack of moisture

Often gardeners do not water potato fields, believing that there will be enough natural moisture. This is fundamentally wrong. Potatoes need watering just like other root vegetables. Moisture deficiency leads to the fact that the tubers become smaller and do not develop.

In conclusion, I would like to say that potatoes need to be given the same close attention as other agricultural crops. Only care and maintenance will allow you to achieve a high yield.
