Mineral wool: the danger and harm of the most popular insulation
Mineral wool is used in construction as insulation for buildings. Many people talk about the danger, harm of mineral wool. How is it shown?
This material is made from different rocks.
There are 4 types of cotton wool:
- stone,
- slag,
- basalt
- glass wool.
The composition of each material is similar, but there is a difference in fiber size.
Glass wool - a popular insulation. It is durable and resilient. Rodents do not like the material, it does not rot and is frost-resistant. However, you need to work with extreme caution.
Glass wool in the fibers contains glass and if there is pressure on the material, then the glass disintegrates, and dust and glass particles are released into the air. Particular harm is done to the eyes and lungs. Therefore, it is so important to work with a protective respirator, gloves and goggles.
Moreover, if you work without gloves, then in contact with the skin, glass wool can damage it and penetrate inside. As a result, irritation and itching will appear on the skin.
Formaldehyde resins are used to hold glass wool particles together. When destroyed, they release phenol. It is especially harmful to work in hot weather or in a warm, closed room.
Metallurgical waste is often used for the production of mineral wool. To reduce the cost of manufacturing, many manufacturers use slags containing mercury, cadmium and lead. Therefore, it is recommended to buy only certified material. High-quality material, using high quality raw materials, is not harmful to health and the environment.
The safest stone wool. It is made from rocks.
The material is pressed into a dense layer. The fibers are bonded with formaldehyde resin. Phenol is hazardous to health, but not in this material. It does not stand out from stone wool, as it is neutralized during the production of the material.
In addition, fibers, unlike glass wool, do not irritate the skin, do not prick. But it is also recommended to work with gloves and a respirator. It is better to cover the finished cotton wool surface with a waterproofing membrane.
Insulate with mineral wool only outside the building. Indoors, it is harmful.
