How to equip home carpentry: advice from a professional carpenter

What do you need to buy for your home carpentry equipment? This question often arises for beginners, because they do not want to throw money away. We turned to a professional carpenter, performer FORUMHOUSE exchanges Viktor Korolko and learned how to equip a workshop and how much it costs.

"There is a great desire to work with wood and a free space of 10 squares for the equipment of an amateur workshop. I want to make some simple furniture, work with epoxy. Tell me what is the minimum set of tools you need to buy for the first time? What is needed for a novice carpenter? "

Carpenter's answer

“I always look ahead, so I will start my answer not from the present, but from the future. Today you are a beginner, just starting to tinker, bought a minimum set and are ready to allocate 10 m2 of area, and in a year you are a pro and all 10 squares are filled with machines, filled up with tools, furniture, and filled epoxy. There is nowhere to stand - it's cramped!

Why am I? If you are seriously thinking about a carpentry workshop for production, then 10 squares is not enough, and when all production is reduced to one stool for the kitchen, five meters is enough. "

Required inventory

• Workbench 1 * 2. This is just nowhere less. There is a vice on the table, drawers under the table and a cabinet with doors.
  
• Assembly table 1 * 2. You can, of course, collect furniture on the kitchen table, on the floor or on the bed in the bedroom, but this will be a collective farm.
  
• Drilling machine. You can do with a screwdriver, but even the simplest carpentry does not tolerate crooked holes, and hands too!
  
• Sharpening machine for sharpening tools. The tool, as you know, dulls over time, so you will have to sharpen a lot - from a drill to a chisel.
  
• A sharpener at the edge of the workbench is always close at hand, without getting in the way.
  
• Rack for materials, tools and fixtures 1 * 0.5 m.
  
• Wall organizers for hand tools - above the workbench and on all accessible walls.
  
• Hinged boxes for screws, nuts and self-tapping screws of all stripes.
  

We consider the squaring of the furniture: 1 * 2 + 1 * 2 + 1 * 0.5 = 4.5 M2. We take at least the same amount of space required to access the workbench, table, rack and tool. A total of 9 squares - lucky!

Carpentry tool

From hand tools at least: multi-tooth hacksaws, clamps, chisels. Well, consumables: emery with different grains, drills and cutters, lubricants. And I almost forgot - an electric grinder.

What does not fit now, but definitely not superfluous in carpentry in a year

• Sawing machine. At first, you can get by with a manual circular or jigsaw - the furniture is simple, it will tolerate.
  
• Milling machine. At first, a manual electric milling cutter.
  
• Lathe.
  
• Miter saw.
  
• Jointer.
  
• Thicknesser.
  
• Joiner's press.
  
• Grinding machine.
  
• Chip suction, but you can make it yourself.
  

When equipping a room, do not forget about natural and artificial lighting, exhaust ventilation, video / noise insulation (no matter where your workshop is, vibrations will be transmitted to the whole house). And also take care of the allocation of power for all electrical equipment.

How much does it cost to equip a carpentry workshop?

• Rack and organizers for tools from 3 thous. rub.
  
• Hand tools from the list from 10 thousand. rub.
• The workbench and assembly table can be made by yourself according to the drawings from the Internet. Ready-made models will cost from 25 tr.
  
• Electric jigsaw from 3 thous. rub.
  
• Electric milling cutter from 5 thous. rub.
  
• Manual vibration grinder from 5 thous. rub.
  

In total, cook over 50 thousand at the start. rub. As for professional carpentry, feel free to allocate another 20 m2 of space!
