How to get rid of mosquitoes in the country: looking for an effective way

click fraud protection

The theme of the fight against mosquitoes in the country is hackneyed far and wide. The network offers a lot of ways to save you from squeaking misfortune. But is it possible not just to protect yourself from mosquitoes, but to get rid of them? Let's figure it out.

Folk remedies

The first thing the owners of summer cottages resort to. Everything is used - vinegar, lemon, cinnamon, vanilla extract, eucalyptus oil, juniper twigs, mint, rosemary, basil, garden lilac and indoor geranium. The list is far from complete, but there is an opinion that all these things protect from mosquitoes, scare them away. And this is true, but only half.

How do they work

Female mosquitoes find victims by the heat and smell they emit. What do acetic acid and basil have in common? That's right: a pungent aroma. It is unlikely to scare away insects, but the smell of human sweat will mask. This is how most folk remedies work.

But geranium and vanilla will not help get rid of mosquitoes in the country. These are rather personal protective equipment: they will "hide" you, make you "invisible" for bloodsucking for a while. The duration of action is limited to 20-30 minutes, but the mosquitoes themselves will not go anywhere.

Repellents

These are natural or insect repellent chemicals. Somehow it didn’t grow together with natural ingredients, but synthetics became widespread. Here are the familiar creams, aerosols, gels and sprays that are abundantly presented on store shelves.

How do they work

The main component of most repellents is diethyltoluamide (DEET). It was developed in 1946 by the US military and used to protect soldiers from insects. Initially, it was believed that the substance discourages the sense of smell of blood-sucking, thereby depriving them of the opportunity to find a victim. But later it was proved that mosquitoes smell diethyltoluamide and try to avoid it (this applies to both males and females).

Killing mosquitoes on site is not about repellents. Before us again PPE. It is, of course, better than grandma's recipes, but there will be no miracle: you smeared yourself, perfumed yourself, 2 hours have passed and the bloodsuckers love you again. And you also need to keep in mind that diethyltoluamide is dangerous to humans!

Mosquito repellents

They're fumigators. This method of mosquito control has been shown to be highly effective indoors, but outdoor devices are also available on the market. Some of them show good results.

How do they work

The principle of action is similar to repellents, but other active ingredients are used in repellents - insecticides. Most often it is allethrin: in the format of a bottle with a liquid, or plates soaked in it. Fumigators are equipped with a heating element powered by mains, accumulator, batteries or portable gas cartridge.

The surface interacting with the insecticide heats up, the poison evaporates. The vapor concentration is harmless to humans and animals, but not to insects. Alletrin disrupts the nervous system, causing spatial disorientation, hyperactivity, prostration, and paralysis. Indoors, this ends with the death of bloodsuckers, in the open air they try to get away.

But as soon as the device stops working, the mosquitoes will return. Hungry and angry. And if you left the range, they are already waiting for you. In general, scarers will help you spend a couple of three relatively quiet evenings in the country, but, alas, they cannot destroy mosquitoes on the site.

Ultraviolet lamps

Those very little blue crackling ones that you probably saw in the movies. They are also called anti-mosquito lanterns, although in reality they are more like "electric chairs" with lighting.

How does it work

The ultraviolet lamp emits light that attracts nocturnal insects. The lamp body is surrounded by an energized metal grid, safe for humans and pets, but deadly for insects. And then everything is simple: the mosquito flies and naturally “roasts”.

However, there is one problem: mosquitoes are not attracted to light. At least by itself. As a bait, it will act only in combination with some signs of a living organism, for example, an imitation of the smell of sweat - attractants. Such lamps are also on sale, but there are only a few of them and they are expensive, so they almost never fall into the hands of summer residents.

But, with the help of an ultraviolet lamp, it will not work to get rid of mosquitoes in the country. The thing is beautiful, but useless. Alas, in 99% of cases, mosquitoes do not perceive them.

Treatment of the site with insecticides

A radical solution to the problem, a way to fight mosquitoes for the most desperate. Before use, it is worth considering - insecticides are extremely dangerous for humans and pets. The consequence of processing can be a serious violation of the natural balance, because not only mosquitoes, but also other insects will be destroyed. This will negatively affect fruit and berry crops. But if you look, from the other side - this is a sure way to get rid of mosquitoes on the site - it completely mows down the population.

How does it work

The area is treated with insecticides in two stages. First, attention is paid to the places of potential accumulation of larvae (ditches, pipes, drain systems, gutters), then to the remaining area. Since mosquitoes do not migrate far from their habitat, the risk of an outbreak of population growth is minimized.

Mosquito killers

There are two types of destroyers - carbon dioxide and propane.

How do they work

Cunningly and subtly impersonate living warm-blooded creatures. This is due to three things.

1. Attractants that mimic the smell of sweat. For example, Octenol. Placed in a reservoir blown by a built-in fan, the substance evaporates and attracts mosquitoes.

2. Heat and carbon dioxide. In propane destroyers, they are released during combustion (the fan also works from this). In carbon dioxide, CO2 is supplied from a cylinder, and the body is heated by a built-in electric heating element.

3. Backlight - the same as in UV lamps, only here it imitates movement ("running" lights).

The mosquito is sure that it is an animal. After all, what he flies to:

a) warm and breathable;

b) smells right;

c) moves.

Having flown closer, the insect is sucked into the device, if the exterminator is propane. Or electrocuted if the trap is carbon dioxide. Everything, finita la comedy!

The method is correct, it allows you to completely get rid of mosquitoes in a summer cottage, and we are talking about a large area (manufacturers claim a range of up to 50 acres). It should be noted that the method is safe for people and animals. The only sad point is the cost.
