5th place: berry yew

Among all conifers, yew is a less preferred crop. All parts of it are poisonous, so it is undesirable to make a hedge from this plant if there are children or animals in the house. Also, be prepared to warn guests not to touch this plant. And it is difficult to look after him, you need to adhere to safety rules.

But the culture is hardy and has many positive qualities, which more than cover the disadvantages:

  • Even on an old plant, shoots form well.
  • Easily transfers pruning.
  • Has an impressive life expectancy (up to 4 thousand. years).
  • Withstands drought and poor conditions.
  • A winter-hardy plant that tolerates growing in the shade well.
  • The bright red berries look beautiful.

Adhering to simple safety rules, you can grow yew on your site. Wood has bactericidal properties. This plant lends itself better to forming than others. Therefore, if you need a clear hedge shape, you should choose this particular plant.

4th place: juniper

All conifers grow slowly. Juniper grows on average 20 cm per year. But such a hedge will grow on the site for many years. The average lifespan of this plant is 250 years. It is used to create molded and free-growing hedges. The plant has a number of features:

  • It tolerates pruning shoots.
  • A single-row planting has a density of 80-100 cm.
  • It is a soil-improving, soil-protective crop.
  • Virtually unaffected by pests and diseases.
  • Drought tolerant.
  • The needles do not crumble.
  • It grows on almost any soil.

The plant needs a lot of light, otherwise it loses its decorative qualities.

3rd place: spruce

One good plant for a hedge is spruce. It grows slowly, but some varieties have a lifespan of up to 400 years (for example, Norway spruce). When planting, spruce trees are placed at a distance of about 1 m from each other. If you reduce this distance, you get a dense wall of tall plants. It will be impervious even to small animals. The benefits of eating are the following:

  • Many varieties tolerate gas pollution well, poor ecology of large cities.
  • They tolerate the haircut well.
  • The crown begins almost from the ground itself.
  • Branches are almost never exposed.
  • The hedge turns out to be thick, wide enough.

Among the disadvantages of this plant is the need for a sufficient amount of moisture. Spruce does not like to grow in the sun, especially in the first years after planting, it requires fertilization. You need to form the crown at the same level.

2nd place: Lawson's cypress

This is one of the most beautiful representatives of conifers. Its branches are evenly spaced and very dense. Lawson's cypress grows fast enough. Many varieties are frost resistant. Features of this coniferous plant:

  • The dense crown is highly decorative.
  • Shoots are scaly, green-blue.
  • The plant is not demanding on the soil. Feels good on acidic, slightly alkaline soils.
  • Does not need abundant watering, grows both on dry and wet soils.
  • The cypress feels good both in the sun and in partial shade.

Do not plant a decorative hedge in the shade. Lawson's cypress in such conditions quickly loses its decorative effect. The branches are becoming sparse. In the heat, the plant needs spraying, does not like soil compaction.

1st place: thuja

Many gardeners agree that among conifers, thuja is the best solution. This plant is known for its excellent decorative properties. Almost any shape is created from the bushes, because the shoots of the plant tolerate molding pruning perfectly. Plants can be planted close (at a distance of 45-50 cm) to create a dense hedge. A decorative fence can be obtained within 7 years after planting a plant on the site. Features of the plant:

  • The hedge will be green from the ground.
  • Forming trimming on the sides can be omitted if a columnar variety is planted.
  • The plant is undemanding to soil, but it develops better on loams, sandy loam and fertile soils.
  • Tolerates gas pollution, poor ecology.
  • Not afraid of the winds.
  • Thuja is resistant to pests and diseases.

In the bright sun, the green branches of the plant turn yellow, lose their decorative effect. Therefore, you need to plant the plant in a slight shade. Thuja is frost-resistant, not afraid of adverse external influences. A fence made of this plant fits well into the landscape of almost any garden.

Western thuja varieties are well suited for creating hedges in temperate climates. They are not afraid of frost, grow quickly and are aesthetically pleasing. If you need an unpretentious, but very beautiful plant, from which a living fence will be created, you should choose exactly that one.
