The world's first floating nuclear power plant "Akademik Lomonosov" was put into operation

So it was announced that the unique in its kind, the world's first floating nuclear power plant, bearing the name "Akademik Lomonosov", has successfully passed the entire set of tests and put into operation.

What is this station

So, "Akademik Lomonosov" is a unique vessel 144 meters long and 30 meters wide. At the same time, 70 specialists work at the station at once.

After the completion of all organizational and technical measures, the station will supply electricity to the northernmost city of the Russian Federation, Pevek, as well as the adjacent settlements. And of course the industrial enterprises of the region.

The security level meets the strictest international standards. I would like to emphasize that the floating station was tested with a 10 point earthquake simulation.

Thus, the testers wanted to completely eliminate the likelihood of a catastrophe in the event of a huge tsunami wave. And these tests were successful.

What makes the station unique

Of course, one can argue and say: the station is not unique, because similar installations have existed before, and the same function can be performed, for example, by a nuclear icebreaker.

So, similar stations were actually built earlier, but these were just experiments. And the task of icebreakers is not to stand idle and generate energy for the coast.

But the main feature of such a station is not in the narrow specialization of the facility, but in the cheapness of its operation and further disposal. Yes, do not be surprised, this is its peculiarity.

Of course, you can build a ground station and operate it. As they did, having previously built the Bilibino nuclear power plant in the region. But any station has its own service life. And now the Bilibino NPP is being decommissioned.

And the disposal of the facility in the Far North without the absence of roads and appropriate infrastructure costs colossal money.

The station "Akademik Lomonosov" can be disconnected from the network without any special financial efforts and sent to the port of Murmansk and even St. Petersburg during the summer window and refuel there or dismantled.

And it will cost a mere penny (compared to dismantling a ground station in the far north).

Another main feature of the station is that with the help of it you can develop new territories, and this will be many times easier. After all, this region is of particular importance for the Russian economy, since huge reserves of tungsten, gold, palladium, etc. are concentrated here.

In fact, such stations greatly simplify and reduce the cost of the development of hard-to-reach regions. And since only Russia has similar nuclear power plants, it gets a significant advantage in this regard.
