New building technology: metal-timber beams
There are interesting, but little-known building solutions that allow you to reduce the weight of the floors without reducing possible loads. These solutions include metal-wood beams, in particular - HTS-beams:
The technology was developed in Norway back in 1970. and is used for frame construction, hangar overlap. But in our country the technology is practically unknown.
A beam consists of two bars of a certain section (sometimes made of glued wood - LVL-bar) and a galvanized metal profile pressed into the tree. With increased loads, two sheets of metal profiles are used.
Of the advantages of the material: beams allow you to cover spans of premises up to 16 m. Increased bearing capacity compared to wooden beams at such a span. Overlap weight.
Entire frame houses are also built from such beams. I did not find information about the price in the public domain. It is necessary to inquire with the manufacturing companies. But due to the use of galvanized steel, the price will not be low. Apparently, this is why the technology and the beams themselves are little known.
Metal and wood are not friendly materials. Condensation can form on the metal and cause wood to rot. And metal is a cold bridge. In our climate, there are no objects that were built decades ago using these beams. Although, with a reliable vapor barrier of a frame house, nothing will happen. Residential buildings are being built entirely of metal and insulation ...
Probably, such beams are ideal for warm and dry climates and for open sheds and storage sheds.
The second option for metal-wood beams:
A truss made of two wooden blocks, fastened with a metal profile. The technology also came from the west and is called Posi joist. This construction uses less metal in weight than the example above. The bearing capacity must be considered by contacting the manufacturer.
This design has an additional plus: the necessary communications (cables, ventilation, heating pipes) can be carried out inside the beams.
The rafter system of mansard roofs can be of different thicknesses. If you buy kiln-dried wood and such a metal profile, then it is not difficult to assemble the farm yourself.
In a metal profile, the fastening principle is similar to that of nail plates, which are used when installing rafters.
Cost for a 6 m beam: 425 rubles / r.m. Even the cost of an I-beam from OSB sheets is slightly higher.
Assembly process in production using machine tools (press).
This technology is the most interesting because of the lower material consumption of the floor structure, respectively, lower weight, ease of lifting and installation. And with the ever-increasing price of lumber, it makes sense to count and compare such hybrid with traditional timber beams.
