Want to make your unsightly furniture an order of magnitude more expensive? It's easy! You just need to know the nuances of applying a decorative coating
What am I talking about?! Yes, about the noble patina! Which can overnight give your usual, and even well-worn furniture a special touch of sophistication and luxury. Moreover, it’s business-like - he bought a special agent for artificial aging, applied it to furniture, and VUAL. But not everything is as simple as we would like!
Good afternoon dear friends!
Indeed, any business has its own subtleties. And the use of artificial patina is no exception! Decorative coatings will certainly make your unsightly furniture more beautiful and aesthetic, but only if it is applied correctly. Otherwise, the result will not please you! So, in order to avoid disappointment in such an interesting event, I prepared 5 common mistakes to keep in mind before getting started.
By the way, later you can come up with your own intriguing story for your old-new furniture and tell it to your guests. So you will make your interior more unique, interesting and even piquant.
Mistake # 1. Do not take into account the type of wood
. To begin with, patina can be applied to any piece of furniture. But on one it will look like an expensive decoration, and on the other - a vain transfer of money and effort. For example, it is not recommended to patina the wood of fruit trees that have a red tint. On them, the decorative coating will acquire unwanted reddish tones.Covering light wood furniture, such as pine, is also difficult. Since, in order to obtain an aged effect, it will be necessary to first darken the wood, and only then return it to a light color. It is irrational to waste time and money on such work. Also, patination is not used on furniture made of plywood, MDF, etc.
Solid oak, beech, ash and alder surfaces are ideal materials for applying patina.
Mistake # 2.Do not calculate the strength. Any new business requires certain skills. Therefore, before you start working on the chosen piece of furniture, practice on an unnecessary board or other furniture that you will not mind ruining and, as a result, throwing away. This way you will gain the necessary experience in specific processing.
Keep in mind that smooth, flat surfaces are difficult to patinate. Giving them a vintage look will require additional effort. On furniture with patterns and moldings, the decor is easier to reproduce and has a more natural look.
Mistake number 3. Choose the wrong color combination. In patinating, the biggest challenge lies in matching shades. Tones that are too close should be avoided, as the difference between them will simply not be visible. It is also not recommended to take very distant tones. The contrast will be too high and the coating will lose its naturalness.
Please note that the result of staining with the same paint may vary. The final shade of the surface depends on the original condition and color of the furniture. Therefore, be sure to test the composition in an inconspicuous place on the back wall or bottom board.
Mistake # 4. Keep the paint dry. When patinating, excess haste can ruin the whole effect. This business takes time and patience. It will take about 3-4 hours to dry each layer. The process, of course, can be shortened slightly if you use a building hair dryer.
If you want to check the degree of dryness, then just put your hand. A completely dry surface will have an even temperature. In this case, you can start applying the next coat.
Coloring should be carried out without being distracted by extraneous matters. The paint on top dries quickly! In the event of a delay or pause, it will lie unevenly and ruin all previous work.
Mistake # 5.Forgetting to apply a protective layer. Coating is only half the battle. After that, you need to ensure its protection and proper care. It is better to choose white antique wax or matte varnish for the finishing. A protective layer is applied only after the paint has completely dried.
And further! It would be ideal to periodically repeat this procedure about once every six months or a year. That's all!
