The second light or the secret of a cozy home: when an architectural solution is not in favor of practicality
What makes a home cozy? Interior, furniture, or maybe a fireplace or carpets? These elements only emphasize the cozy atmosphere, but do not create it at all. Comfort is achieved with the help of a certain space zoning. One of these solutions is a second light or, as it is also called, a double-height hall.
What is the second light
The second light is called rooms in which there is no ceiling on one or more floors. Another feature of the double-height hall is the presence of a second, upper row of windows. Roughly speaking, the second light is a spacious room with a very high ceiling and large windows.
The purpose of the double-height hall is a living room, a recreation area for family members. All kinds of sofas, armchairs, coffee tables fit perfectly here; this is the best place for a massive fireplace. Pictures, sculptures, installations will look harmonious here. A billiard table and a home theater will not be superfluous in this room.
Large windows are a special chic of a double-height hall. They will not let you get bored, as the "live" picture behind them is constantly changing. It's like a large interactive wall that changes the picture depending on the light, weather and season. Imagine how pleasant it is to sit in an armchair with a cup of warm tea to watch the fall of the leaves or the pouring rain.
What is the magic of coziness of this architectural project
Whatever one may say, but such rooms have a special magic: it is pleasant to be in them - you can feel some kind of warmth. But why is this happening? And it's all about warm childhood memories. When we were small, the rooms seemed large to us, and the ceilings were inaccessible. Getting into a spacious room with high ceilings, something from childhood, associated with good memories, involuntarily wakes up in us. This creates a feeling of inner comfort.
Which houses are suitable for the second light
It is possible to make a double-height hall only in large houses, with an area of one floor of at least 120 square meters. The facade of the building must also meet a certain requirement: have large windows or panoramic glazing. This architectural project is also suitable for mansard-type houses.
Nice but impractical
This architectural solution serves only for the aesthetic component - no utility! And there is an explanation for this: a large glazing area is often a source of heat loss. And also a room with a high ceiling is more difficult to warm up, as heat accumulates in the upper part of the house. This means that heating costs will be higher.
And of course, precious square meters! It should be understood that the second light abolishes at least one spacious room. And if the ceiling is removed on the third floor, then for the sake of beauty the area of an average apartment leaves.
