Why does an onion fly fly around my landings

My neighbors suffer from the onion fly, which lives in onion plantings. I suggested to them an effective remedy for this pest, which I have been using for a long time. I do not use kerosene and salt, everything is much simpler.

The onion fly begins its activity in spring, it lays eggs of white, oblong shape in an amount of 4 to 30 pieces on the soil and next to the bulbs.

After 5-10 days, larvae 10 mm long appear, which creep up to the bulb and begin to spoil its delicate scales, eating out its inner part. Then the larvae, after three weeks, climb into the ground, pupate, then young onion flies appear. Pests manage to lay eggs 2 times per season.

These insects do not like strong smells. I plant a little onion before winter, in mid or late October, depending on the weather. I sow dill on top. In the spring it grows up to 20 cm, I cut it off so that it does not interfere with the development of onions and land. During this time, the onion fly does not have time to lay eggs, because dill gives off strong smells for it, which the pest does not really like.

The onions that I sow before winter are mainly used for greens. I plant the rest of the onions in the spring, but I plant one bed a little later than the main planting dates, after the flight of the onion fly. I, of course, take a risk, because the second middle of summer can be rainy, and the heads may not have time to ripen. But for this case, there is always a safety bed, which is planted in the first decade of May.

If you cannot save the onion planting from the onion fly, then you can use the following tools. A solution of tobacco dust (1 kg per 10 l) copes well with the pest, to which ash (1 liter per bucket of water) and laundry soap are added. The latter, in crushed form, will require 100 grams per 10 liters of water.

I cook tobacco dust in water for 30 minutes (in a ratio of 1 to 10, for example, 1 kg per 10 liters of water). Pour 1 liter of tobacco mixture per 1 running meter.

This mixture will help to cope not only from onion flies, but also from a whole range of pests, for example, spider mites and aphids. Plants in this case just need to be sprayed with a solution.
