Appreciated not for flowers, but for the luxurious ornamental greenery of the host, in principle, it refers to unpretentious garden plants.

But if the details, inattention to which can greatly harm this green beauty! One of these problematic moments is raising the rhizome above the ground level.

I have met opinions that this is a normal phenomenon. But the botanical books about hosts claim the opposite.

The fact is that the host's root system is its main "tool" for obtaining moisture and nutrients. That is, no top dressing on the leaf can give the same effect as root ones.

And if the root part rises above the ground, two things happen:

1. The area from which the plant is actively losing moisture is increasing.

2. The area of ​​the living part, through which the host can receive water and valuable elements for nutrition, is reduced.

Guided by my personal experience, I can say that the host cannot die because of this, but quite really run into the following:

· Slowdown in growth;

· More poor formation of deciduous mass;

• deterioration of the decorative appearance, for example, hosta colors become faded;

· Decrease in plant immunity;

· Sluggish recovery of hosts after pest attacks;

· Decrease in winter hardiness.

This phenomenon is especially dangerous for young plants and miniature varieties.

You can observe it most often in the spring. This is understandable - after winter and spring changes in nature, changes in the height of the soil are very possible. It can also occur during the rainy season when the hosta is planted in the wind.

As for the host's rescue measures, there are some subtleties here. It is not enough just to take it and hastily cover it with earth - the desired effect will not be obtained.

The soil that surrounds the rhizome should be fertile and loose, for which I advise you to mix perlite into it. The fact is that the small roots and sprouts of the hosta must be able to "breathe", otherwise, covered with the ground, they will rot and not receiving enough oxygen, gradually die off.

The burial depth of the hosta depends on the size of the plant. The smallest ones are buried by 2-4 cm, the middle ones - by 3-5 cm, and the huge ones, which exceed 70 cm in diameter, by 5-7 cm.

But deepening does not always help. It so happens that it seems that the hosta is just as if partially ripped out of the ground! In this case, there is nothing left to do but transplant the plant. This is not difficult, and even adult hosts adapt normally to a new place.
