A fiery fireworks display, comrades gardeners!

Have you noticed red spots on currant leaves in the garden? The defect is not only aesthetic: it speaks of a possible infection with pests and fungi. And the plant, spending energy on the fight against parasites, gives a meager harvest. In the article, you will learn how to distinguish pests from fungi, how to treat spotting in currants and collect a good harvest from healthy bushes.

There are 2 "diseases" of the bush, which are unambiguously hinted at by red spots on the leaves: nasty anthracnose and no less nasty gall aphid.

I must admit that I did not immediately understand how to distinguish them from each other, but now I am writing clear instructions for you. After all, only by finding the reason, it is possible to clearly solve the problem in a short time!

Anthracnose: Summer Fungus Rampage

Anthracnose on currants: clearly

It doesn't look as disgusting as the scarlet blisters from the gall aphid, but just as dangerous. It's a fungus

, in a humid summer, able to "eat" the entire bush, which once pampered the gardener with his favorite berry.

  • Loves wet and warm weather
  • Begins to assert itself in June, before that gradually swaying
  • First attacks the bottom of the bush. With inaction on the part of the owner of the garden, it moves to the upper floors, leaving behind dry leaves
  • Burgundy spots appear on the leaves, turning into brown, and later into black. The rampage of the fungus ends with the end of the leaf: brown and withered from the edges, it falls to the ground.
Small spots gradually merge into a large "pattern" - the enemy is working
Soon I will write in detail about the schedule and options for feeding currants that increase the yield. Subscribe to my channel not to miss useful material!

Fortunately, anthracnose is not difficult to cure with a responsible approach to business.. First, they carry out sanitization: remove spotty leaves from the bush, dry on the ground, weeds around. Anything where the fungus and its spores can lurk. Then comes the turn of treating the bush and neighbors with a fungicide. For example, Bordeaux fluid helped me.

From the author: For some reason, everyone is afraid to use chemistry. Isn't anyone afraid of losing all the currant bushes? While folk remedies work (if they work at all!), The fungus will infect half a garden

Aphids are another matter. Gallic

Clinical picture of gall aphid. Perhaps you will not confuse with anything

Gallic aphid is a completely different matter. A variety of a known pest that specializes in berry bushes:

  • The most recognizable sign of infection is the red, swollen "blisters" on the leaves.
  • Not only do the currants, chosen by aphids, look disgusting. Aphids draw out nutritious juices from the plant. A bush that does not receive something gives a crop less than it could. So do not let the situation take its course, comrades!
  • Signs of garden aphid infestation are noticeable earlier than the symptoms of anthracnose: already at the end of April-May, when the pest develops its vigorous activity.
  • Aphids, unlike fungi, love dry and warm weather. Therefore, by the middle of a successful summer, the problem can grow into a grandiose scale.
On a note: Often, anthracnose and gall aphid walk hand in hand in the gardens of summer residents. In damage to leaves from aphids, a pathogenic fungus enters. Well... Off we go. This was the case in my case.

But a couple of garden treatments will expel the gall aphids from the site:

Sick leaves, alas, will no longer become normal. But the young ones will be green, not speckled
Author's advice: If currants come across anthracnose or aphids in summer, you need to remove fallen leaves under the bush for the winter. So that they do not become the source of a new infection
  • There are a bunch of folk remedies for aphid control. Based on caustic products: tobacco flooring, celandine, mustard. I tried it - not one completely helped. Perhaps in gardens where the gall aphid is just beginning its activity, infusions-solutions-decoctions will do their job
  • For gardeners who are afraid of chemistry, but who understand that folk remedies do not solve problems, I recommend trying Fitoverm. This is not a poison, but a biological preparation. Efficiency - 3-4, you need several treatments.
  • It turned out to be much easier to remove gall aphids using insecticides. I liked the action "Aktara" and "Aktellik" - 2 treatments were enough. You can choose any drug to your taste and budget, comrades.

Grow black currants and was this article helpful? Please put "Thumbs up" in response, my dears! Thank you. And I suggest to vegetable growers to read: I found out whether it is worth tearing the lower leaves from the cabbage. I won't make a blunder again
