Every year I grow large and juicy onions that make my neighbor envy. I tell you how I achieve
Fiery fireworks, comrades vegetable growers!
Have my neighbor and I have a fun gardening competition every year. We share our joys, discuss failures, sometimes we kindly make fun of each other and our country "achievements".
For the third year now I have won the Best Onion nomination. This year, too, a neighbor, seeing the bright greenery, gave up in advance: "Katya, I envy!" And the whole secret of my success in caring for onions is that I strictly follow a specific growing plan: planting, feeding and - a highlight - careful watering.
Today I am sharing it with you. Proven by three years of practice, so to speak. Save the post and use it!
Oranges will not be born from aspen
It is easier for onions to grow from strong and healthy "onions" than from musty planting material of unknown origin. Therefore, I take the quality of the onion sets seriously. He goes through my strict inspection on three points:
- To be whole, strong, without signs of rot. A point for granted.
- Be big. As my practice has shown, it is easier and faster to win the neighboring competition. I see that the sets reach 1-2 cm. If necessary, I can take a ruler to the store.
- Be zoned. The largest southern onion variety will grow a pitiful likeness in northern latitudes. And, in fairness, on the contrary. I live in the North-West region of United Russia and undoubtedly give preference to the corresponding varieties.
I carefully sort through all the sets that I buy at home. You never know where to expect a catch.
And at the same time I soak for half an hour in a weak solution of potassium permanganate. After all, even the healthiest bulbs at first glance can have a zoo of fungi and bacteria under their husks. It is better to overdo it than to miss it.
Simple landing rules
I am an unfashionable gardener. I tried the know-how - planting onions before winter and was disappointed. Therefore, I plant in the old fashioned way, in the spring, when the earth warms up to... about 7 degrees.
Have you tried planting onions before winter? What are your impressions? Write under the article in the comments
In order for the onion to have enough nutrition and moisture (and this is the key to a large, juicy and tasty harvest), it is important to maintain a distance. My distance between the rows is 20 cm, and between the onions of the sevka is 10 cm. I make a bed about a meter wide so that the onion grows in 3 rows.
Nutrition is the key to success
Onions love loose and moderately nutritious soil. And he hates sour beds with fresh organic matter. The main rule of a good onion crop: "Manure is strictly prohibited!"
When preparing the garden bed, I bring in a little humus and "Nitroammfoski". This is a starter kit. In principle, good onions will grow in such soil and without additional feeding.
But I do dope to make the onion grow "masterpiece":
- As soon as green feathers appear, I scatter urea over the garden. In the rain or watering. Nitrogen is what onions need in early spring.
- In June, I spill the garden bed with a solution of superphosphate and potassium salt. I love these fertilizers! You get the optimal feeding if you take 10 g per 10 liters of water.
In principle, everything is about feeding. There is another "tricky" fertilizer for lagging onions. Subscribe to the channel - soon I will write about the top dressing that needs to be done if by July the size of the onion causes laughter through tears. And now to the most important thing
Watering is the key fad for succulent onions
Although the onion tolerates drought well, it is not worth trying the plant's patience. Feeding on its own moisture reserves, the culture grows not as juicy and large as it could be.
May to July there is an active growth and development of the plant. I make sure that the soil does not dry out deeper than 3 cm. Onion roots always sit in a slightly humid environment.
IN July I reduce generous wateringletting the earth dry. 3 weeks before cleaning, I finish running with a watering can. Or in a month if the weather is going to be rainy.
Try to follow my plan and you will also collect large, juicy and healthy onions with your own hands. Good luck!
