How to properly care for onions to get large and healthy onions?
When growing onions in the beds, you should know some rules and secrets that will allow you to always have an excellent harvest of this healthy vegetable.
Experienced gardeners usually grow onions separately for feathers and for bulbs. This is due to the fact that, depending on the purpose, the care of the culture changes.
Today we are going to talk about onions that are grown to produce good bulbs and then store them.
After the first summer month, it is worth thinking about how to help the onions prepare for ripening and subsequent harvesting.
What does this vegetable crop require in July?
In no case do not feed the onions with nitrogen fertilizers during this period. If not very much fertilizer was applied in the spring and in June, you can feed the onion with wood ash or phosphorus-potassium fertilizers. The soil must be loosened and dry top dressing added. It is best to do this before the rain, but if the weather is dry, you should cut the bed to dissolve the fertilizer.

How to understand that it is time to prepare onions for harvesting?
If you do not apply more nitrogen fertilizers, the green feathers begin to give nutrients to the bulbs and turn yellow accordingly. This is the first sign that it will soon be possible to remove the vegetable crop from the garden.
Features of onion care in July:
- reduction of watering. If there has been no rain for a long time and the bed is completely dry, pour the onion. But, when the feathers of the onions began to turn yellow, do not water the plants under any circumstances. Drought is stressful for plants and the bulbs accumulate nutrients, thus preparing for the "hard period". To limit the access of water to the onion in July, especially if the weather is rainy, cover the garden with plastic. If you do not take action, the onions will start to rot and will be poorly stored.
- during the last weeding, do not huddle the onion, but rather slightly rake off the ground, exposing the upper part. Thus, you provide more access to the sun for the bulbs, allowing the vegetable to ripen faster. In addition, the bulbs will be juicier and sweeter.
- if for some reason the onion is green for a long time, you can speed up its ripening a little. To do this, use a hoe or pitchfork to slightly dig in the onion, thereby injuring its root system. The plant will begin to turn yellow and the bulbs will stop growing and begin to ripen.
If you follow these simple tips, the onions will be juicy and delicious.
