What is an armopoyas and what functions does it perform? Construction educational program

Armopoyas is a name that will not say anything to a beginner, except that it would suggest some kind of concrete belt reinforced with reinforcement. It is also called a seismic belt, which is even more perplexing: earthquakes on our plain are rare and what it is for is not clear. However, this element is necessary and fulfills extremely useful functions.

What is an armopoyas and what is it for?

Armopoyas is a monolithic reinforced concrete tape, poured along the perimeter of the building. Its main functions are to counteract: tensile loads (prevents the wall from breaking); lateral loads (holds the geometry of the structure); point loads (evenly distributes pressure from slabs and beams).

It is laid down:

  • between floors (at the level of each floor);
  • under the roof;
  • under the ends of prefabricated plates (when they transfer a large load);
  • under the ends of the beams.

Armopoyas comprehensively strengthens the walls, increases their rigidity. Walls of bricks and blocks withstand compression well, but do not resist stretching well. By adding a reinforced concrete belt between floors, the tensile load is transferred to the reinforcement that resists this stress. Thus, the reinforced concrete belt increases the strength of the wall as a whole and allows it to effectively resist tensile loads appearing in its upper part. This greatly reduces the risk of cracks that can form when a building shrinks unevenly. If this is not done, the wall will simply crack and even the reinforcement of the masonry will not cope with such a load.

What are lateral loads on walls and how does an armopoyas resist them?

Armopoyas is a rigid monolithic structure, which, due to the reinforced frame, also resists lateral loads. It does this much more efficiently than brickwork or blockwork.

Side loads include:

  • bursting load from the roof, pressing on the walls at the moments when the roof takes on the pressure of the snow;
  • load from strong gusts of wind (wind load on the roof).

It is for this reason that it is highly discouraged to mount the Mauerlat directly into aerated concrete on studs. If this is done, then after a while under the influence of wind load and snow, the fasteners will loosen and there will be a threat not only to the roof, but also to the walls. Armopoyas dampens these bursting loads and maintains the geometry of the walls.

Seismic protection function and point loads

This element is also called a seismic belt and this is not without reason. Reinforced concrete belt is an obligatory element in houses located in earthquake-prone areas. And also a reinforced concrete belt serves as a distribution cushion that receives point loads from floor slabs, beams, and Mauerlat anchors. Point loads cannot be accepted by block material or bricks, and therefore the presence of a reinforced concrete cushion that evenly distributes the weight is necessary. It is recommended to make a reinforced concrete tape under all load-bearing walls.

The main conditions for the armopoyas to perform its functions

The main conditions for the functionality of this element: continuity, continuity, looping along the entire perimeter of the walls. The word belt in the name clearly indicates its binding function. There is only one analogy: if you unfasten the belt on your trousers, your trousers begin to fall off.

What is the armopoyas not used for?

It is not used to level the differences in the walls - this function is assigned to the masonry mortar. And also in the case when a monolithic interfloor overlap is planned - the armopoyas is not needed - it is the monolithic overlap that will cope with its functions.
