Why do some adult cats gnaw on wires? The answer was given by an electrician

click fraud protection

In my mother's house, in a village in her small homeland, there was a cat that, as he became an adult, began to gnaw all the wires to which there was access. The cat was smart, he understood the voice and intonation of the hostess. But it was not possible to wean him from this harmful (and dangerous for his life) habit.

He repeatedly gnawed the cables of all the chargers for the phone (sometimes in "scraps"), the cable of the landline telephone, which was used for the Internet and wires under voltage of 220 V. Once I found access to the pump cable for supplying water from the well and thought that the pump itself had burned out. I will clarify that the cat was no longer engaged in this business (not for the game).

The Internet does not give specific answers to this topic. Only assumptions that the pet lacks vitamins and minerals, so cats brush their teeth. Urban animals allegedly lack attention and they attract it to themselves in this way. Etc.

I don't think country cats need the attention of their owners. There was a caress from the mistress in his direction. Pets in the wild can get trace elements from grass, tree shoots (they instinctively know how to be treated).

Any wiring had to be hidden and hidden in cable channels. I saw tips to spread them with citrus essential oils, aloe (cats don't like them). There are anti-gryzin sprays. But this is a temporary effect.

An unexpected version of the reasons for this behavior of the cat was reported by an electrician who came to fix the cable for the Internet (I was 300 km from the village and to come in every such case - it was not always perhaps).

The version is that some adult cats gnaw the wiring in order to receive a micro electric shock to discharge the nervous system (relieve stress or nervous tension). This is necessary for those cats who do not get along well with cats or have physiological or mental dysfunction that interferes with the reproductive process.

They did not specify how he came to this conclusion. Maybe observation or read it somewhere. But this was confirmed by the character of the cat. Kind, without a hint of aggression. He meowed very quietly (or rather, he practically did not know how to do it). There were no mice in the house, and there was no way to check if he had caught them elsewhere.

One summer, the hostess of the house fed another cat, which stayed with him for the winter and the two cats lived together for several years. Perhaps this psychological passivity affected everything. But the animal's stress accumulated and he had to relieve it in this way.

If anyone has had such cases with his pet, write what you think in the comments.
