Fiery fireworks, comrades summer residents!

Today I will tell you about my unusual experience in gardening life. I really love experiments. 2 years ago, in 2018, I read about a very strange way of planting potatoes. In July - mid-summer.

From the author: For a second, I live in the North-West region of our Mother Russia. And traditional potato planting exercises take place in May, or even in early June (if the year is cold).

Then, in 2018, I looked on the Internet for options that can be planted in July. Because after the radishes and greens, which I grew and froze enough, 2 long and empty beds remained. When I got to the point: "Potatoes", I read it again and exclaimed to myself:

Why are they there, have gone crazy or something. What kind of potato planting can be in the middle of summer, when mine is already blooming with might and main, and soon I will dig up the young for mashed potatoes?

Ufff, from one photo frost on the skin

But... Being a curious person, I carefully studied the question. And, you know, comrades, the late landing, oh, how interested me! And I decided ...

Planting potatoes in July is not much different from the usual. The same holes, the same shovel. There is only 1 significant difference that ensures the success of an adventurous event: now the land is already completely dry, which has given up natural moisture in June.

Therefore, late potatoes must be watered regularly. And in order to do this less, I mulch with a thick layer of cut grass. Fortunately, we have a lot of this good in our village.

You are probably even more convinced of the stupidity of this venture.

  • As I already wrote, with the help of potatoes, you can occupy the empty area left after the crops already harvested.
  • The "July" potatoes were very lucky: they passed the period of activity of the Colorado potato beetle. The pest attacks the field in the first month of summer, and then becomes almost indifferent to planting. And the summer resident has one less headache. And then you're running around with this sprayer... Well, okay, I will not talk about painful.
  • In the second half of summer, we all begin to dig in the bushes. I see. I myself adore young potatoes - their taste is completely different than that of her own. But, if you play too much, you can use half of your potato plantation for a fresh delicacy)) And by planting potatoes in July, I will compensate for the quantitative losses.
  • Potatoes ripen later than spring ones. But it is not critical - even here, in the North-West, the tubers have time to ripen and gain volume. And from here follows the last, most important plus.
  • The temperature in July and August, whatever one may say, is higher than in May and June. I have noticed that mid-summer plantings grow faster than spring companions. The main thing, again, is the presence of moisture.
  • July-planted potatoes are in no way inferior in taste, but they are stored much longer without signs of aging. Why, I’m harvesting later.
