Why we decided to cut the budget for the purchase of double-glazed windows for the loggia
At the initial stage, when choosing a double-glazed window, it is necessary to decide which profile is suitable for this loggia.
Profiles are made from:
Aluminum
PVC
Wood
We did not consider aluminum profiles in spite of their cheapness, since they save heat the worst of all.
Between the wooden profile and the PVC profile, we chose the second only because of the lower price due to the greater popularity. Although in favor of the tree there was an indisputable fact of environmental friendliness.
Next, we were faced with the following question: to give preference to a single-chamber double-glazed window or two-chamber.
When studying this issue, the pros and cons of these two types of double-glazed windows were highlighted. We share our findings below.
Advantages of a single-chamber glass unit:
Low price, which in itself is good news
Low weight, thanks to which you can save a lot on fittings
Cons of a single-chamber glass unit:
Poor thermal insulation
Poor soundproofing
Advantages of a double-glazed window:
High-quality thermal insulation
High level of noise isolation
Stronger construction
Cons of a double-glazed window:
Higher price
Stronger and more expensive fittings needed
Winter is quite warm in our region, and the apartment is located on the sixteenth floor, due to which the street noise does not reach its full extent. This allowed us to give preference to the less expensive option and install single-chamber double-glazed windows, since the issues of thermal insulation and noise insulation are not acute.
We were offered to choose the type of window opening from the following:
Blind (not opening window)
Swing-out
Tilt-and-slide
Sliding
We stopped the choice on the second option, since a window that cannot be opened does not imply ventilation of the room, and tilt-sliding and sliding windows are an order of magnitude more expensive than swing-out.
Based on our experience, we want to share the conclusion that if the climate in your region does not imply severe winters, but the house is not located next to a railway, motorway or other sources of noise, do not overpay for double-glazed windows. Our apartment does not freeze, the level of street noise is not enough to interfere with our life, and we saved a lot of the budget for repairs.
Do you agree with our choice given the climate? Or is environmental friendliness in renovation an important criterion for you, which makes you opt for a wooden profile?
