This year in the Volga region, something strange is happening with potatoes. More precisely, with its absence. Throughout my life of farming in fields and gardens, I remember bad bad harvest seasons. But I can say with confidence: there was no such thing as this year for a long time. And it is not clear from what and why?

I always knew that every season the amount of potatoes the land gives is different, even if sowing the same volume of potatoes. In one year there may be more root crops, in another year there may be a lot of small ones, and after a season there may be few, but all large.

It all depends not only on the quality of the seeds, but also on how well you cultivate the soil, what means you fertilize, and so on. Of course, I haven't had such a crop failure for a long time, so this season disappointed me a lot.

I would like to share this with you, dear readers. I have been engaged in vegetable growing and agriculture for a long time, from the very moment I bought a dacha with my husband. We do not grow on a large scale, but, as they say among our people, “for ourselves”.

But before, it used to be that food was also supplied for sale, since we have a registration for a personal subsidiary farm. We grow various vegetables, but mainly: carrots, garlic, radish, radish, corn, various berries and fruits, pepper, pumpkin varieties, etc. and, of course, our favorite potatoes - mostly Dutch and the Queen's German variety Anna.

This year, as usual, the time has come to reap the fruits of the land and we left for the dacha. I fertilized the land many times, we planted only proven varieties of seeds, but what I saw this year really shocked me, in a bad sense of this expression.

Having dug out the first bush, I was surprised - all the potatoes are small, several potatoes are slightly larger than average. It seemed strange to me. Having dug up the second bush, I was outraged.

But when they raised two rows of potatoes, I realized that this was no coincidence. As a result, all potatoes are small, occasionally medium-sized.

Many friends of mine who grow this product have the same story. I will clearly remember this season for a long time.

From my own experience, I would like to share with you the most important factors affecting the development of the harvest of vegetables and, in particular, potatoes.

Fertilizer and essential trace elements

The following microelements are needed per square meter: magnesium - 5 g; nitrogen - 20; phosphorus - 6 g; potassium oxide - 30 g; Potatoes also require copper, manganese, zinc, boron and, of course, calcium.

And there must be a balance of these substances, since the abundant “feeding” of the fruit can lead to rotting of the tubers of the fruit.

The land on which we plant vegetables is important.

What kind of soil does potatoes like?

In principle, any soil can provide excellent development of tubers. But experts believe that the best types of soils are sod-podzolic, light loamy, sandy loam.

Also, potatoes grow well in areas of black soil. The most unsuitable soil for all varieties of potatoes is clay and sandy. In loose and moist soils, potatoes also yield a good harvest.

But all my knowledge did not help me this year, although I have been growing this tuber crop in the Volga region for many years. And what about the harvest in your regions?
