Strawberries have finished giving berries
Flaming fireworks, fellow gardeners!
Want to increase your strawberry yields? Be sure to do "complementary foods" after the end of fruiting. Berries don't come out of nowhere!
Some gardeners believe that when the last berries are picked, strawberry care ends. The gardener has a lot of things to do, I want to postpone worries about the berry until spring. Leaving the plantation in disrepair, you should not count on a good harvest next year. Strawberries need care for the entire growing season, one of the main activities is proper fertilization.
Why is it important to feed strawberries after harvest?
Delighting us with sweet aromatic berries, the bush gives a lot of vitality. But it is in the second half of July that the laying of fruit buds occurs - the basis of the next year's harvest. The question is, what will an emaciated plant be capable of if you do not help it with nutrients?
With the help of phosphorus-containing fertilizers and potassium salts, the reproductive properties of strawberries are improved, the root system is strengthened, and the protective forces are stimulated. The use of nitrogen fertilizers, liquid fertilizing with mullein and chicken droppings will lead to a violent growth of leaf mass and whiskers, which is completely unnecessary at the end of summer.
Ideal for feeding strawberries after fruiting
Good compound fertilizer - potassium monophosphate. The chemical has a good percentage of elements, the substance in the form of a powder is easily soluble.
Gardeners are more likely to use superphosphate and potassium sulfate. The problem with superphosphate is that it dissolves slowly in water. By steaming 200 g of fertilizer in 1 liter of hot water and leaving it for a day, you will greatly facilitate your life. 200 ml of "extract" goes to a bucket of water. Water the solution strictly at the root, being careful not to soak the leaves.
Remember! The use of chlorine-containing fertilizers on strawberry plantations is unacceptable.
For lovers organic farming you can recommend an ash solution, which contains a lot of useful macro- and microelements. Along the way, alkali repels many pests.
Take a glass of wood ash, pour 2 liters of hot water, leave for 3-5 hours. Strain the solution through a thick cloth, bring the volume of liquid to 10 liters. Bonus in the form of 1 tsp. boric acid powder added to the infusion will add extra pleasure to the strawberries.
We must not forget about the removal of the mustache and weeding in July-August. Take the time once to cover the aisles with mowed grass or peat. Mulch suppresses the growth of weeds, retains moisture in the soil, partially satisfies the berry's mineral needs.
Preparation for wintering
In September, you need to feed the strawberries again. During this period, nitrogen is not acceptable, strawberries can release young leaves, which will reduce its winter hardiness. Improve plant immunity with potassium-phosphorus fertilizers. A nuance is important: in summer, feeding is more effective in liquid form, and in autumn, granules are scattered around the bushes, providing a prolonged effect.
Buy a ready-made fertilizer without nitrogen in the store, for example, Kemira Osennyaya. A good alternative is sifted ash applied to the aisles at a dose of 150 g per sq. M. Embed fertilizers in the soil by surface loosening. A fresh layer of mulch will provide the strawberries with extra frost protection.
Plants are responsive to the attention shown and strawberries are no exception to the rule. Take care of it in summer and autumn, the results of your efforts will pay off with interest!
