As soon as the head begins to form, excess moisture becomes an obstacle to the full ripening of the vegetable. In this regard, with the onset of July, only rain remains from the "irrigation" systems. It is worth noting a characteristic rule for yourself: the beginning of ripening - the end of watering. It is recommended to protect the beds from water as much as possible.

The final growth period is marked by several external criteria:

• the feathers of the onion gradually begin to adhere to the ground. This is due to the fact that the thick stem begins to dry out at the base, and cannot withstand its own weight;

• The tip of the bulb is covered with dry scales, better known as husks.

These indicators indicate to the grower that the crop is ready for harvest.

Dig up the tops of the bulbs - the secret of a large bulk "turnip"

Watering ended a few weeks ago and the bulbs are almost ready to harvest, but the climate has its own plans that could ruin everything. There is a way out - to "artificially" help the onion to ripen, without particularly disturbing the natural course of business.

Exists several methods that will help the plant reach the norm naturally:

  • a pitchfork is required. It is necessary to raise the bulb so that the roots are visible. Tear them off and put the head back in the ground. This is necessary so that the turnip stops receiving liquid;
  • if the area is loose, the soil is dry and crumbly, it is appropriate to pull the onion halfway by the tops. In this case, the rhizome is damaged and is no longer able to feed.
  • if you don’t want to jerk and you don’t have a pitchfork at hand, you can clear the soil from the bulb. Husks in the open air begin to harden, which promotes aging.
