What to look for when choosing street lighting
In order for street lighting to work for a long time and shine brightly, you need to know what details to pay attention to when choosing it. In addition, it is necessary to properly plan the location of the lighting fixtures and define the tasks for each type of fixture. This is what will be discussed today.
Luminaire types
General lighting luminaires are divided into three main types:
- trunk;
- landscape or local lighting;
- decorative lighting.
The first type is used for road lighting. Trunk luminaires have a powerful and bright light; they are quite energy intensive. For a private house, they are suitable as lighting for a parking lot, entrance to a courtyard or garage.
Landscape, as the name implies, are created to illuminate territories, pedestrian zones, buildings. They have different versions and installations - they are mounted on poles or walls; and also differ in power and brightness of light. They can be used for lighting: paths; territory; parka; garden; vegetable garden; yard; and also for highlighting the walls of the house, fence.
Decorative lighting is a variety of solar-powered garden lights; street garlands. This type of illumination, one might say, was created more to create an atmosphere, and not to ensure the safety of movement at night.
Important points when choosing street lamps
Street lighting should be maximally protected from atmospheric influences, namely, to resist moisture, dust, and insect penetration. To do this, you need to look at the IP in the device labeling. There are two numbers, one of which means protection from moisture, and the second - from the penetration of dust and other foreign bodies to conductive elements.
For street lighting, you need to choose luminaires with a protection class of at least IP44. In comparison, IP67 / 68 luminaires are underwater and are used to illuminate pools, while IP20 is common home lighting.
Types of lamps
Typically used in street lighting:
- incandescent lamps;
- halogen lamps;
- gas discharge lamps;
- LEDs.
The first ones have already departed and are considered a rarity: they shine faintly and are very energy-intensive. The second - halogen, should be used for spotlights: a halogen lamp produces a powerful stream of light. The third type - gas-discharge - they are replacing incandescent lamps; are the best option for street lighting. The latter, LEDs, are new technologies: they are bright enough and consume little electricity.

About planning street lighting
A couple of lines about planning. Lighting the backyard is a costly event. If you do not need to burn electricity all night long, you can purchase lamps equipped with motion sensors. The principle of their operation is simple: the device reacts to human movement and turns on the lighting. This saves electricity and conserves lamp life. And also lamps with motion sensors are an excellent tool against uninvited guests.
