3 reasons not to buy a log house if there is no money for its maintenance

A log house is the dream of many who want to join suburban life. The exterior of the log houses is very impressive: they seem spacious, warm and very cozy. But is the blockhouse as good as they say about it? Let's understand and dispel some of the myths about log houses.

Energy efficiency

They say that wooden houses are warm. Is it so? No! Log home owners complain about the fact that the walls of the house live their own lives and energy efficiency is out of the question. Unsophisticated studies with a thermal imager confirm the fact that a log house does not keep heat.

Causes

You need to start looking for the cause from afar and long ago. A log is far from being a technological building material. Firstly, it has an uneven geometry: it is some kind of material of approximate fit, leaving gaps, which are then caulked in various ways. It is a fact.

Secondly, even chamber-drying wood has properties to shrink, dry out and twist. This means: log walls have some mobility, which means they break the tightness of the house, which leads to a loss of heat. Cracks are the main disadvantage of log cabins.

But even in a house with good heating, the heat is uncomfortable. This is due to a large temperature difference: cold air enters the room, and warm air rises closer to the ceiling. Some owners of such houses recommend making floors on the ground and equipping them with water heating - this significantly increases the comfort of living in the cold season.

A small excursion into history

Previously, they built from logs because this material was available and there was no particular alternative to it. The log houses were spacious, but few people know that with the onset of cold weather, most of the usable area was no longer used. The reason: it was simply impossible to warm up the wooden house, and in this case the families settled in a special small room inside the house, called a winter house. Such measures were taken not at all because the frame was warm.

What now?

It is expensive to heat a log house in our time. To improve the energy efficiency of such buildings, they should be insulated from the inside. For this, a layer cake is created, consisting of a frame, insulation, vapor barrier and finishing material. With this option, all the traditional flavor, which sellers of log houses are so fond of talking about, disappears. You can sheathe a log house outside, but then why is it needed at all, if its only advantage is a spectacular view, hidden under the clapboard or imitation of a bar?

Sustainability

The tree breathes, it is the purest gift of nature and cannot harm a person. This is another beautiful bike that buyers are guaranteed to be led to. The log house really breathes and he does it through the cracks in the walls and this does not apply to environmental friendliness.

But what do we mean by environmental friendliness? That wood doesn't release chemicals? Wood does not emit toxins like, for example, foam or PVC, but from this it is not completely safe and does not exclude the occurrence of any diseases.

Dust

The main complaint about the log house is dust. There is always a lot of it, it is everywhere and very difficult to clean. The fact is that dust accumulates at the bend of the log, and it can only be removed manually, in the old fashioned way. There can be no question of any vacuum cleaner. And how can a house be environmentally friendly if it has a constant and high concentration of dust? Dust is harmful!

Mold

Another point is mold. Wood doesn't like moisture. Constant dampness on wooden surfaces with a 100% guarantee will breed mold, and its pores, which are regularly found in the habitat, cause serious diseases. To combat this phenomenon, a very good ventilation system must be installed in log buildings. It will not hurt to provide ventilation and an air filtration system. Expensive, but otherwise, living in an eco-friendly home will be accompanied by dust and mold.

Livestock in assortment

Another disadvantage of wood is that it becomes a refuge for all kinds of living creatures. Mice, rats, squirrels, birds, spiders, midges, wasps, ticks and other representatives of rodents and insects love to settle in wooden buildings. Frameworks, by the way, are no exception. In general, there is little good with such neighbors.

The cry from the soul of the owner of the log house:
“Near the guest bed, in a log, there is some kind of playful creature, crunching the log all night. Finding and killing her is not possible. "

About furniture, tiles and other structures

It is not worth telling here for a long time, you can cite as an example a quote, the situation cannot be described more eloquently.

Anonymous log house owner:
“The house is constantly in motion. Heating is turned on - everything is normal, when not - everything moves. To hang the kitchen furniture, I had to build a metal frame, sheathe it with plasterboard, and only to attach cabinets and shelves to it. There is no other way. Sliding wardrobes so beloved by our citizens cannot be installed at all - there is nothing to "attach" to, and the wall and ceiling live their own lives. The staircase, which was "tied" to the wall, ended up twisting, and the railing tore out. The tiles on the kitchen floor cracked in the second year of house operation.

We do not call for anything, but only try to honestly cover the situation in order to protect someone from problems. If you like tradition, national flavor, brutal appearance of the house and you have the money to service all this, this is your option. Otherwise, you can choose a more technically advanced housing.
