Spread linoleum for a friend. The nuances of styling and trimming near the threshold

An old friend again made itself felt the other day. He said he was worn out with the kitchen renovation and asked lay linoleum. Last year I didrenovation of the staircase, for one thing, I think, let me see if everything is in order there and if there are any cracks on the ceiling with the problem stove. In fact, everything turned out to be a plane tree, so the linoleum was laid with peace of mind.

The kitchen is not big, somewhere 4.2x2m, but the difficulty was that it has two doorways with ledges, which are located opposite. And this means that the trimming had to be done almost along the entire perimeter, because because of these protrusions, the linoleum was bought larger than the room and was wrapped around both opposite walls.

IMPORTANT! In this case, the roll should be unrolled by two or three people and diagonally. The unwound canvas must be lifted and put in place with a fold on the walls, holding it on those sides where the folds are larger, so as not to tear the wallpaper on the walls, which are often only glued.

Pruning was performed under medium trowel, since dense linoleum with a long spatula is not easy to bend and press in the right place for cutting. As expected, I left a small gap between the wall, about 0.5-1 cm. The base is felt, but not very thick, so I used a regular construction knife with a replaceable blade with a small release for cutting (photo 2).

Even if the laying is carried out in the summer, the code of the linoleum has expanded as much as possible from the temperature, this does not mean that in winter it will run away from the cold, it will become smaller and therefore you can do without a gap. The gap is still necessary, because over time, the linoleum stretches a little under the feet and begins to occupy a slightly larger area. Although this is not critical and, if small waves appear, it can always be shortened.

As always, the most interesting thing was near the doorway. In one opening there are slopes, to which the plinth was later attached, which did not create any difficulties, except for even and accurate cutting, especially along the slope angle. But in the second opening, it was necessary to fit the linoleum under the door frame with a platband, which rested tightly against the floor.

In this case, you can, of course, jewelry cut the linoleum along the profile of the wooden box and baseboard and then glue the edges to floor, but I don't like this option, which is why I decided to cut the box itself with the trim dismantling.

To make it easier to work in the opening, I first performed all the trimming of the linoleum along the walls, and in the openings I shortened the edges to a safe minimum. I left the exact trimming along the threshold and under the trims at the very end.

Near the door came in handy small hacksaw for wood with a medium tooth. Although, for greater accuracy, the tooth could have been even smaller. Sometimes in such cases I even use canvases for metal, but this time this was not at hand.

When I sawed off the platband and the box from below, I did not try to do it as deeply as possible, especially since the threshold also interfered. I think 2 cm depth in such cases, it will be enough with your head so that the linoleum does not jump out even with a strong stretching movement to the side.

In order not to bother and measure how much to shorten the platband, I put a piece of linoleum under the hacksaw (photo 5) and sawed right on it. You will definitely do it right the first time.

The cut edges had to be finally adjusted to the depth of the cut and slowly brought under the box and the casing with a spatula. And along the threshold, it was still necessary to press the canvas with a connecting strip, which he screwed with screws directly to the edge of the wooden threshold itself.

The last photo also includes the end of the uncovered skirting board, for which the caps were missing during installation. So the owner will have to buy it separately and install it himself.
