Building and finishing materials harmful to health Part 1
New or newly renovated housing can be easily identified by the specific odors emitted by: painted surfaces; plastic panels and windows; stretch ceiling; skirting boards; laminate and more. The novelty is, of course, good, but it should be understood that some finishing materials will turn the home into a gas or dust chamber. We will tell you not only about materials that cause direct harm to health, but also about those that become dangerous due to improper installation or operation. Mineral wool
Here you need to immediately make a reservation that mineral wool, or rather, its varieties: glass wool; basalt wool; slag wool - materials are environmentally friendly, do not emit toxic substances, do not burn. But, as always, there is one but... These heaters have a fibrous structure, which eventually collapses and turns into dust microparticles. And dust, especially if it is pieces of glass, stone or slag, is dangerous for the respiratory tract.
The destruction of mineral wool fibers does not occur immediately, but gradually. This is influenced by moisture that has got into the insulation, as well as vibrations of the house, for example: slamming doors, these are natural processes. To avoid the penetration of "glass" dust into living quarters, you need to insulate the mineral wool. For example, in the walls of a frame house on the inside, such a film is provided - a vapor barrier. So this film does not let steam into the insulation, and the dust from the insulation into the rooms. Observe the installation technology and you will not be afraid of mineral wool!
Linoleum
Elegant floors, no doubt, are a decoration of the house, apartment, office, but not all outfits are equally useful. Linoleum linoleum strife! There are different technologies for the production of this flooring. The most environmentally friendly linoleum is made from jute fabric or wood chips by gluing with natural resins. Such a coating is safe, and you have to pay well for safety - this linoleum is expensive, and its installation is not easy.
For the broad masses, the industry has invented, and actively and in large quantities produces an analogue made on the basis of synthetic resins. Here, too, everything is not so simple - there are conscientious manufacturers who adhere to safety standards, and there is handicraft at an attractive price. The most poisonous is linoleum made with PVC (polyvinyl chloride): with slight heating, it releases phenol and dioxin into the air. These substances inhibit respiration and are carcinogenic, that is, they cause cancer.
And do not think that knowing this information, you will not fall on the hook of unscrupulous manufacturers. It might look different. How? It's simple - the new housing market has a lot of offers of apartments and houses with turnkey renovation. Naturally, not every developer thinks about the health of the residents, someone counts the savings and profit. And to achieve maximum profit, everything that is cheap is used. That's how beautiful and inexpensive gas chambers made of poisonous materials appear on the market! It becomes no joke if cheap toxic linoleum ends up on the floor in a children's room.
Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) finishing materials
We have already touched on PVC in the section about linoleum, but now a little specifics about this material popular in construction. Let's go through the products that consist of it, but first, a little about the polyvinyl chloride itself.
PVC is a poisonous plastic. The fact is that initially, polyvinyl chloride is a hard and brittle material. To impart high strength and plasticity to PVC, a lot of chlorine, chemical stabilizers and plasticizers are added, as well as: lead, cadmium, phthalate, organotin substances. Flexible materials, such as skirting boards, linoleum, etc., do not contain phthalate, and this factor makes them a breeding ground for mold. Whatever marketers say - none of the known doses of PVC is safe - PVC is toxic even at low concentrations.
Premises contaminated with PVC emissions (dioxin, vinyl chloride, dichloroethane) can cause: disturbance of the nervous system; respiratory diseases; decreased immunity; retardation in the development of children; allergic reactions; reproductive system problems; cancer and stuff.
PVC are made of: pipes; floor coverings; skirting boards; stretch ceiling; sandwich panels; windows, doors, window sills; electrical equipment. Of course, in modern realities you can't get away from this material, but try to minimize the presence of PVC in the interior decoration. If PVC products are already in the house, provide good ventilation and aeration.
