Self-supporting recirculating roof for the gazebo. Design by Leonardo da Vinci

Imagine a situation: someone decided to build a hexagonal warm gazebo with a central location of a stove, fireplace or open hearth. Because the roof beams are joined along the axial center of the structure - the chimney cannot be placed in the center. But there is a solution for such a roof - it is self-supporting recirculating roof:

Reciprocal roof (in English. reciprocal frame - self-supporting frame)
Reciprocal roof (in English. reciprocal frame - self-supporting frame)
Reciprocal roof (in English. reciprocal frame - self-supporting frame)
Reciprocal roof (in English. reciprocal frame - self-supporting frame)

Schematically, the roof structure looks like this:

Each beam rests on an adjacent one, and the whole structure is closed in a ring. The result is a rigid structure supported by walls or vertical pillars. In the center, there is space for the exit of the chimney.

If you don't believe that such a design works, you can fold it without fasteners, even from matches or small bars:

This type of roof is a self-supporting structure. Fixing the beams is only necessary to prevent displacement and wind protection (so as not to be blown off by squally wind). There is no load on the fasteners under normal conditions.

The structure of a reciprocal roof can be multi-level, with a large number of beams resting on each other. This allows you to make the roof of large polygonal structures. Because the slope angle is small - you need to take into account the snow load.

The disadvantage of this design is the difficulty of making a roofing covering. Perhaps the only optimal option is to sew up with OSB sheets and lay soft tiles.

This principle of constructing self-supporting structures is quite ancient, for example, the design of self-supporting bridges according to the scheme of Leonardo da Vinci is known:

Drawing by Leonardo on the second slide. Each inclined beam rests on the transverse one in front, and with its upper edge abuts against the lower transverse one. Because everything is loaded with its own weight - a stable structure is obtained. Simple and ingenious.

A small bridge built according to this scheme. Large cross-sections of beams, long logs are not needed. Supports for them, which rest on the ground and on the bottom of a river or stream. The material consumption of such a design is clearly less than traditional designs.

The structure of the domed house is also self-supporting.

But what if you do not dare to assemble such a self-supporting roof, but instead choose a classic one? Here is one of the options for joining the beams so that there is room for the chimney in the center:

It will be necessary to weld a two-level structure from corners and pipes according to the design dimensions. And the project of the roof is pre-drawn in the SketchUp program.
