The ideal stool weighing 930 grams: the story of a carpenter with thirty years of experience Part 2
What do the masters of their craft think? What is the secret of success? Everyone wants the answers to these questions. In the first part, we started a story about the participant FORUMHOUSE under the nickname Oliosh_mura, who honed his carpentry skills for thirty years and eventually achieved his goal. His enthusiasm can only be envied, and his history should teach us perseverance!
Tripod concept
In addition to the classic 4-legged stool, I also assembled a tripod. If there were no special problems with the lid, then instead of a cross, a three-beam star-shaped part was needed, which I called three hundred. The relatively thin middle part of this part, very graceful, broke after about a month of using the stool. The reason is external influence, that is, the children got up on it. But outwardly I liked the stool and decided to further develop the tripod concept.
New technologies for familiar furniture
Preliminary modeling of the products on the computer helped me imagine a model of a triangular brace stool. However, at the same time, an additional requirement was imposed on the strength of the lid, since one side of the jib rested against it. Even when making a preliminary prototype, I was faced with the need to cut precise angles in two planes. The circular machine broke thin jibs, short ones, moreover, it was difficult to hold. I made a carriage for a circular, but the cleanliness and accuracy of the cut was not very good.
Modernization
I now have a quality side saw. I assembled the stool cover according to the old scheme, with the elements overlapping each other. The first stool with jibs was made of birch. The result is a lightweight and very durable construction. I sat on her, and my wife sat down on my lap with a load of her worries. While this stool is intact, however, it is still dry. The connections did not inspire confidence in me and I went over them with screws.
The hole in the middle of the lid turned out to be quite large, I did not want to use elements of such a large width due to their irreversible deformation and the introduction of additional fasteners. To introduce an element of novelty, I decided to leave these holes.
Practice, namely sitting on such a stool, has shown that it was not worth it. Although it is possible to lay a pillow or pad, the holes are not that big.
Fastening the jib with a leg using pins or screws after gluing the junction with glue seemed reliable, but the presence of additional fastening elements, and indeed metal, confused me. The connection of the jib with the lid looked like a thorn-groove and from the side of the leg I decided to make the same connection. In this case, the thorn was formed on an inclined plane adjacent to the stem. In the leg, of course, a hole was formed. First, this part, let it be a jib, was cut out using a side saw, followed by fitting with a cutter and a rasp. The accuracy is not to say to be sufficient.
To align the planes, I assembled a two-coordinate mill. Having fixed the jib at the right angle, I began to form the spike I needed using a router.
What is the ideal stool?
Made four and tripod stools. With holes in the lid. As I wrote above, a solid lid is better, so the next option was a stool with a lid glued from individual lamellas. To give strength to the cover and the edges of the lamellas (rails, in other words), he gave a relief on a milling machine. The machine, by the way, was also homemade. And I also had to make a set of clamps for gluing the shield.
I didn't save much with the size of the stools, so they turned out to be relatively large in seating area. This area seemed to me unnecessary, and in the next version I reduced the size. Instead of a shield, the cover was made of a prefabricated assembly of individual elements.
The weight of the product is my pride!
This last stool in the chain of evolution that I have launched is the best achievement so far. Its weight is 930 grams. My stools, as my family and guests notice, are very light. Before that, the options were about 1.5 kg. The tripod with a wide seat weighed 1.2 kg. From birch and pine, I came to a tree, which, in my opinion, is the most suitable for these purposes. The aspen version is perhaps better, but so far I haven’t gotten my hands on material of sufficient quality. The insert can be made oval, as, for example, in the presented version of the semi-bar stool.
The years of labor were not in vain
As a result, I was able to realize my idea of a light, beautiful and durable solid wood stool without metal parts or special fasteners. The product is assembled from 13 separate parts, mostly the same. The material for the production is a 20x80 edged spruce board. The material options for the insert are different. There are no straight or sharp corners in the final product. There are no glued edges, cladding, screw caps and other things that can come off during use. Thin spruce legs serve as shock absorbers and shock absorbers at the same time.
