I renew the raspberries every year in August and collect more and more berries. I share tips (that work)
A fiery fireworks display, comrades gardeners!
The end of August is the time to start working in the raspberry-tree. This will increase the quantity and improve the quality of the berry harvest for the next year.. The 20th according to the national calendar was "Marin's Day", on which, according to signs, raspberries finish their active fruiting. And right now you need to get down to work so that the bush calmly enters the dormant period.
Why August is the best time to prune raspberries
Raspberry shoots that have finished fruiting, are no longer needed by the bush. Their "content" takes away nutrients, sun and space from the young overgrowth, which we need to keep.
Raspberry shoots born this year, should get stronger before the onset of frost. Strong, having gained strength - they will survive the winter and will actively grow in spring, and then they will give a sea of flowers and berries. According to my observations, comrades, I pick 1.5 times more berries compared to those times when I did not cut raspberries in August.
It was not without reason that I mentioned that young raspberry shoots need time before the onset of severe cold weather. It's great if there are 3-4 weeks before the first frost. Therefore, the timing of pruning raspberries after harvesting differs across regions with different climates:
- Middle zone of Russia - second half of August;
- Siberia, the Urals and the Far East - all August;
- The southern regions of our Motherland - from late August to early November.
How to update raspberries after fruiting in August: talking about my progress
First of all, I choose old bushes that have already worked their way. Usually these are plants from 6 to 10 years old. I just watch the raspberry bushes and see that some old-time bushes began to bring less harvest, and the berries themselves, alas, became small.
Such bushes should not be spared and uprooted, then replacing with young shoots. It is naive to think that the old raspberry will come to its senses and again begin to produce a large harvest. Alas, the potential of the bush has been exhausted. And we should say goodbye to him, comrades.
Now I proceed directly to pruning.
What to trim from raspberries in August-September for rejuvenation
Let me remind you of the basic rule: it is better to cut raspberries so as to leave a minimum stump (no more than 5 cm). Otherwise, bacteria, fungi and pests can start in it. And then they re-infect the whole raspberry tree and there will be more headaches.
What shoots to cut off raspberries after fruiting in order to increase yields:
- All dry, weak and diseased shoots. For example, I came across a purple spot in my garden at my dacha:
- Biennial shootsthat have had a crop this summer. They will no longer bring many berries, but will only interfere with the young. They can be recognized by their woodiness, dark color and the state of the bark - in old branches it cracks.
- Extra young shoots. A lot does not mean good. There should be room for everyone in an ideal raspberry tree. A dense planting always leads to sad consequences: a lack of light and nutrition, stagnant air, fungal diseases and unpleasant pests.
Now I leave 5-6 young shoots. And every year I notice that the harvest is getting better and better. I recommend, comrades!
