What to build from? This is perhaps the most popular question that arises from a person not related to construction. There is no affirmative answer and there never will be, but there is an invaluable experience of people who FORUMHOUSE happy to share. A member of our portal under the nickname myroad60 explained clearly why he chose a profiled timber of natural moisture for the walls of the house.

Profiled timber of natural moisture: a builder's view

We decided to build a house in the Krasnodar Territory from profiled timber of natural humidity with a cross section of 150 * 200. For this there were a number of personal motivations and a view from the side of the builder.

With a construction glance:

  • The effective wall thickness is 195 mm: as practice shows, it is quite sufficient even for a house in central Russia. Moreover, such a wall thickness is sufficient for southern latitudes.
  • When the timber dries, cracks are inevitable. In a rectangular bar in cross-section, the main crack will run in the vertical direction, which greatly reduces the likelihood of large cracks emerging on the front surface of the bar.

  • An expansion groove is made in the timber, which additionally directs the crack in the vertical direction and reduces the internal stresses of the timber during drying.
  • Brus has a Finnish profile. This profile, on the one hand, allows the wall to be windproof; on the other hand, it is very easy to install.
  • The corner joints of the timber are processed with a labyrinth lock, which ensures good thermal properties of the corner.

Natural moisture profiled timber: personal motivation

  • In my opinion, it is the profiled timber (solid wood) that is the optimal material for a wooden house.
  • I am very familiar with the topic of wooden housing construction and I know who to contact for a high-quality log house.
  • And I also know the difficulties that you face when working with "living" material, like solid wood, and we are ready to overcome them for the sake of the result - a beautiful wooden house in which we hope to live for many years.

They don't build like that here!

During our trip to the Krasnodar Territory, we talked with many people. When we talked about a wooden house, we heard more than once: "they don't build like that here." It really is. In the south of Russia, there are very few houses built from solid wood, but they exist.

In our opinion, this is more related to traditions than to any objective grounds. There is no timber in the southern regions. There is no habit and culture of working with wood, characteristic of more northern regions.

50–70 years is a normal life at home, and then it will become morally obsolete. Why build for centuries?

As for the question "how long will it stay?" The negative factors affecting wood are essentially the same - both in the south and in the north. The service life of any house is, in my opinion, not determined by the walls.

For 50 years, the building has become obsolete morally. That is, new generations will already be guided by their own ideas about convenience and practicality, which differ from ours. It makes no sense to build for centuries, build from what seems convenient to you. This applies to housing built using any technology.

Therefore, we build for ourselves as it seems good to us. We want to live in a living tree. In general, we are building a wooden house because we believe that the idea that a wooden house in the south will not last long is wrong.

There are no critical factors in the longevity of a house in a southern climate. This house, in any case, has the same chances to last 70-100 years, as a similar house in more northern latitudes.
