How I cut the tops of Carrots so that it lasts longer and better
The time to harvest the carrots is about to come. But are all summer residents happy about this? Many people worry about the thought that carrots are not easy to store.
This vegetable spoils quite quickly, if you do not know one secret: how to properly cut its tops.
Collect, trim and store
Indeed, rotting and sprouting of carrots are problems that make many summer residents clutch their heads. But it's actually quite easy to avoid rotting: pick your carrots on a sunny, dry day. It is also worth determining the period of the waning moon according to the lunar calendar.
When digging up carrots, in no case do not damage the root crops: they should not hit something, so do not knock on vegetables in an attempt to shake off excess soil.
It is also worth carefully putting them in buckets or pots when collecting, you do not need to throw carrots into a common heap.
Violation of this rule leads to cracks in the vegetables, pathogenic bacteria get there and the carrots rots.
Also, be sure to dry the carrots before stacking and storing them. It is best to store it at a low temperature.
The problem of sprouting carrots has also been relevant to me before. But now I know how to avoid this: it's all about pruning correctly.
The main secrets of pruning carrots
It is necessary to trim the carrots so that they lie for a long time, do not dry out and do not germinate. But many summer residents, due to their ignorance, do it wrong.
For some time now, I have known that the method of pruning root crops depends on the expected shelf life. The rules look like this:
· In the carrot that you plan to eat or prepare in the fall, in the first three months after harvest, we cut the tops a couple of centimeters above the root crop head.
· Cut the carrots that you want to keep for a long time, more than 4 months, together with the head - about 3-5 mm will be enough, no more.
· If the carrots will be used to obtain seeds in a few months, we cut them as indicated in the first option.
It is the trimming of the tops with a small part of the head that gives the longest storage. Thus, the carrots will not be able to germinate, the tops will not take nutrients and moisture from the roots.
Subject to all other conditions - temperature, humidity in the storage room - your carrots will lie for a very long time and will not deteriorate at all.
