How to quickly hammer a metal pole into the ground without a sledgehammer: 2 proven methods
When you need to hammer something metallic into the ground, only one thing comes to mind: a sledgehammer. But waving this tool is an inconvenient, labor-intensive and dangerous event. We'll show you how to drive racks into the ground without much effort. At the end there will be a small but interesting #test.
Method one - grandma
The headstock is a device for driving metal posts into the ground. The grandmother works on manual traction, but unlike a sledgehammer, her every blow is struck exactly on the target, which increases efficiency. And also the option of a slip is excluded, which guarantees whole arms and legs upon completion of the work.
It is made using a welding machine and a grinder. As a material, you need: a metal profile 80 * 80 * 3 mm - 1 meter, or the same piece of steel pipe with a diameter of 100 mm; weighting agent - 4–6 kg; round rod with a diameter of 16 mm, a length of 2 meters.
The weighting agent can be improvised: a metal blank - the same steel round timber, with a diameter of 100 mm; at worst, an old sledgehammer. The rod, if desired, can be exchanged for a steel pipe of small diameter.
The headstock is assembled simply: a weighting agent is securely welded to one end of the pipe or profile; on the sides of 16 mm round timber, two long longitudinal handles are made, which are firmly welded to the base of the device. You need to cook well, since the tool is created for striking metal objects.
It is simple to work with this device - you need to put it on a pole and, raising it, sharply lower it with a small accelerating effort until it stops. To drive high pillars, you will have to use an elevation - a stepladder or goats. When working as a grandmother, you should take care of your hands and wear gloves: this tool quickly fills calluses. Don't forget about eardrums and stock up on earplugs or headphones.
Method two - a jackhammer with a nozzle
This option is mechanized, which greatly facilitates the work. The bump stop does not need to be bought at all, it is enough to rent it for the duration of the work. You only need to make a nozzle, for which you need to buy a pike. The price of a pick for a jackhammer starts at approximately 250 rubles. And you will also need pieces of metal, a corner or professional pipes with a thickness of 4–5 mm for the manufacture of the striking part.
At the peak, you need to weld a heel pad, larger than the cross-section of the column. The site needs to be reinforced with four kerchiefs, scalding the pike rod with them. In the center of the heel, you need to add a small protrusion: it is needed so that when rebounds from blows, the jackhammer does not jump off the post. The section of the protrusion should be slightly less than the internal section of the post - this is necessary so that the nozzle does not bite. The attachment should not turn out to be high - this will allow you to conveniently put on and remove the instrument.
If you have to do a large amount of work, you need to make 2-3 nozzles so that if one breaks down, the process does not stop. Some will argue that a punch is also suitable for these purposes, but this tool drives the racks well into wet spring soil - problems arise with dry soil. Even a powerful hammer drill does not give more than 20 joules of impact, which is not enough. A conventional bump stop produces 40 joules, which allows you to drive a 60 * 60 mm professional pipe into the ground in 1-1.5 minutes.
