Which house is better: after purchasing a summer cottage, the question arose sharply before me: "What to build a house from?"
Our reader shared his story of building a house with us.
After acquiring a summer cottage, the question arose sharply before me: "What to build a house from?" Neighbors and acquaintances unambiguously advised gas silicate blocks. And a lot spoke in favor of this building material: gas silicate blocks are an inexpensive material, and walls are erected from it rather quickly. However, this type of structure required additional finishing - the house needs to be plastered both outside and inside. The plaster layer requires finishing - painting or wallpapering. These are significant additional costs. After thinking it over, I decided to build a log house. The cost of a log house is more expensive than blocks, but this way you can avoid the cost of additional finishing. In addition, the house made of wood has natural ventilation, which creates special comfort from the inside, improves well-being, and guarantees a sound sleep.
The owner of a sawmill from a neighboring village took on my order. It was decided to build a five-walled house - a house with a cut dividing the premises into two parts. The manufacture of the log house and its installation took about 3 months.
This is how the blockhouse looked at the manufacturing stage:
They cut the forest in winter. At this time of the year, the movement of sap in the tree slows down. Logs harvested during the cold season are drier and less prone to twisting and shrinkage over time. The diameter of the log is 220 mm. Walls made of a log of this size keep heat well at any time of the year, and it will be possible to live in a country house all year round.
Impregnation treatment
The assembled blockhouse must be treated with impregnation in order to protect it from external influences. My choice settled on a wood impregnation brand “Belinka Top Lasur”. The paint has many advantages:
· Resistance to moisture and ultraviolet radiation;
· Contains alkyd resins, which give the surface a beautiful shine;
· Environmentally friendly - can be used for both external and internal work.
And the paint has one drawback - it is quite expensive. The consultant of the selling company helped to calculate the amount of impregnation. In order to cover the logs in two layers, I need 10 liters of the composition. The cost of 10 liters of impregnation was about $ 90.
Having purchased the paint, I gave it to the builders. After a while it turned out that there was not enough paint. In addition, another 10 liters were bought and transferred to the dacha through a neighbor. The second bucket was not enough. Having bought the third bucket of paint, I decided to check why the impregnation is leaving in such volumes. I arrived at the dacha and saw a brightly colored building. The builders sprayed the impregnation with a spray gun without spreading it evenly with a brush. The coating was not absorbed evenly, and stains were visible in many places. The layers of impregnation hid the structure of the tree so tightly that it seemed that the frame was treated with oil paint. Builders got off with a small fine for overspending paint.
Assembled and impregnated house:
Installation of windows
Another additional expense was the installation of windows. Wood is a living material, and processes of drying, twisting, shrinkage are constantly going on in its structure. To prevent deformation processes from affecting window blocks, it is recommended to install them in the casing. The cage is a power box made of thick timber, which is fastened into the window opening using the "groove - thorn" method without the use of fastening hardware. Sagging, the crowns slide along the box without affecting the window blocks.
PVC windows are installed in a wooden casing:
There are five windows in my house. The foreman made the casing and installed the windows. The cost of installing a window in a regular opening is $ 20. And the cost of installing a window into the opening of a wooden house, with preliminary installation of the casing, costs $ 70. It's easy to calculate that the additional cost was $ 250.
This is how the casing looks from the inside:
So, wishing to avoid the cost of additional finishing of the house, I had to pay for an additional volume of expensive paint, installation of a casing. In the future, there will be expenses for caulking and internal sealing of inter-crown seams.
The house is practically built, and you really always feel comfortable in it. And although I could not avoid additional costs, I do not regret that I chose natural wood as a building material.
In autumn, it is especially pleasant to be in the country:
What do you think about this? What is the best way to build a home: brick, gas silicate blocks or natural wood?
