Fiery fireworks, fellow flower growers!

Do you want to keep the roses in a decent condition in winter so that in the spring they immediately go in the direction of the royal bloom? Take care of the proper preparation of roses for winter, avoiding mistakes. Our beautiful roses, Queen of the garden, are sometimes not forgiven.

Ignoring diseases and pests

The rose bush is often attacked by pests, fungi and bacteria. They significantly impair the health of the plant, make it weak, and in the end, infection leads to the death of the plant. On my site, I come across powdery mildew and aphids on roses, and a couple of bushes got sick with black spot.

I made a selection of photo examples of common diseases growing up. This is a gallery - scroll to the right, comrades, to see it to the end:

It is rash to think that the problem will disappear by itself over the winter. Pathogens and parasites (or their eggs and larvae) overwinter in the ground, fallen leaves or cracked bark on branches. And they will definitely come back again, and even catching the neighbors.

  • Are there signs of disease and pests? Treatment by means of "diagnosis" is absolutely necessary. From ticks - acaricides, from insects - insecticides, from fungal diseases - fungicides.
  • Even for healthy roses, I do the preventive treatment in September. A decrease in temperature along with an increase in humidity is a "red rag" for fungal diseases. I spray the bushes with "Fitosporin" or a solution of Bordeaux liquid, and at the same time I spill the soil in the trunk circle.

Don't send roses for the winter sick. All the same, in the spring it will have to be processed, but under cover the problem can only increase.

About autumn pruning roses: appropriate and inappropriate

Without proper pruning of roses, you can't wait for decorativeness
Without proper pruning of roses, you can't wait for decorativeness

Due to autumn pruning, the rose may disappear if you do not know the subtleties. The only thing that is not in doubt is that the rose should go to rest without inflorescences and leaves (both on the branches and on the ground). Because they, again, are breeding grounds for all kinds of diseases.

You cannot do formative pruning of the rose while the weather is warm. Trimming will cause young shoots to grow. They will not have time to ripen before frosty cold weather, they will seize in sub-zero temperatures and as a result, the whole bush will experience stress.

I leave formative pruning for the spring. In autumn, you need to wait for the onset of cool weather (5-10 ° C) and the active processes in the plant will end - it will not decide to grow new branches. I cut only young unripe and diseased shoots.

Autumn watering and feeding can harm

In the middle lane I advise you to stop watering the rose with the onset of SeptemberI. The bushes have enough natural moisture in the form of dew and precipitation. And due to the additional moisture, plants are at risk of rot and other fungal diseases. In the southern regions, where it is still hot, the rose continues to need watering. Very moderate.

After active flowering, it is impossible fertilize roses with nitrogen fertilizers - this stimulates the growth of young shoots. And they, comrades, we have already found out, there is no need in the fall. But feeding with potassium will help the rose "ripen". I feed roses with potassium magnesium until the 1st decade of September.

Applying a rose dressing later will confuse the plant. It should be getting ready for bed, not evolving over a nutritious treat.

Improper shelter: kills roses more often than frost

Surprisingly, in winter, roses are more likely to vomit rather than freeze. The shelter must be air-tight to reduce the risk of rot. I am horrified to hear that some cover roses with plastic wrap or plastic bottles with closed lids. Better to use a spun bob, spruce branches, or at worst just throw in more snow.

No need to rush to cover. It is better to wait for the onset of stable subzero temperatures. The only thing is that it is better to "pack" in advance climbing rosebecause from the cold its branches turn from plastic to solid and can break.
