When to start planting winter garlic.
Autumn has come, all the main crops have long been removed from the gardens, and the time has come for winter sowing of some crops. One of which is indispensable in the kitchen, although it is required in a small amount of garlic.
To get a rich harvest of garlic, you need to plant it on time.
Winter garlic should take root, but in no case start growing, otherwise it will freeze.
In order to avoid such a fate, you should know the rules for planting winter garlic:
Do not listen to anyone who claims that garlic can be planted in the garden starting in August.
At this time, the weather is quite warm and the garlic will quickly take root, starting active growth.
Naturally, with the onset of the first frost, it will suffer. Garlic is planted around October.
And even this month it is worth paying attention to the temperature: if during the day it is not higher than 10 C, and at night the first frosts are already there, it's time to plant winter garlic.
So that the garlic does not suffer from severe frosts, the cloves are immersed in the ground at least 4-5 cm. The larger the garlic, the deeper it is planted.
Even in the worst frosts, it will not suffer.
In order for the garlic to grow large, it is recommended to pour wood ash into the grooves. This simple fertilizer also saves garlic from decay, which is especially important in rainy years.
If winters are very harsh in your area, you can mulch a garlic patch. For this I usually use peat or sawdust mixed with soil.
But don't forget to remove the mulch in the spring to make it easier for the garlic to go up.
If you follow the above recommendations, you are guaranteed an excellent and healthy harvest of garlic!
